 I was on a troop transport that carried Army troops from New York to Germany. I know how cold the Atlantic Ocean can get. While I was reading that, I could feel the cold winds blow.

 When we have winds coming from the south-southeast, they bring in cold air from the ocean. Ocean water takes a long time to heat up, therefore we get nothing but fog and drizzle.

 Once it gets really cold, you have both sides of the Atlantic bidding for the same gas. This winter we had a very cold period in November and December, and there was a lot of competition between the U.K., Spain and the U.S.

 They move up in elevation until reaching that special number - 32 degrees. But to get snow this low, cold air has to already be in place, and you can't get cold air over the ocean.
