With the river right gezegde

 With the river right down the street here and the whole idea of Sarah Orne Jewett, I thought it would be fitting to commission a composer to set her texts to music.

 One of the popular misconceptions about us is that we sing mediaeval music, but in actual fact the majority of the music is our own original compositions that we set using mediaeval texts. I love setting texts to music... anonymous poets from 700 years ago. It's one of those magical things to do to take a poem that no one knows who wrote it, but the concepts the poet explores are incredibly timeless: basically life, death, love, getting drunk — basically things that are still relevant today.

 I feel a great affinity to his way of thinking. That's why I wanted to work with him. He is a composer of words and I am a composer of music, but we have a lot in common.

 If you think of a composer when he sits down to write, it's just him and a piece of paper. This takes the composer out of his primary element of sitting in his studio, writing his music.

 As a composer, he was really a pioneer. He really is one of the most intelligent musicians out there. There are a lot of people out there who don't know his music. We thought of it as a great way to pay tribute to him.

 You talk to mayors and council members in these river communities and they know every street in town. It's almost a prerequisite for their jobs. But very, very few know the river. It's a forgotten river.

 We made this very clear last year when the new rule was first touted. The idea of using just a few bars from someone else's work to create your own is an infringement of the original composer's rights and qualifies for a sharing of any royalties that may accrue. Some local composers have gotten away with this before but there is now greater vigilance in the music industry.

 If you want to write, do so. If you don't want to hold down a full time job in order to have the comfort to write, give up the idea of being a composer of concert music, unless you can learn to be happy in poverty, marry the rich, inherit the wealth, or otherwise fall into money.

 It's hard to decide how to match words to music. It's not like it's twice the work. It's always difficult for me to explain to the composer what I'm looking for. I'm not a professional; I lack even basic knowledge about writing music.
