 It is his runaway budget and trade deficits, billions spent on tax giveaways, backwards-looking energy plan designed by and for special interests, and inaction during this country's health care crisis that have created a myriad of problems for our children's generation.

 The president often says it is the responsibility of elected officials here in Washington to face today's challenges and not to pass them on to future generations. Yet it is his runaway budget and trade deficits, billions spent on tax giveaways, backwards-looking energy plan designed by and for special interests, and inaction during this country's health-care crisis that have created a myriad of problems for our children's generation.

 Despite the same, tired old scare tactics of the special interests, under the governor's budget New York will continue to spend more money than any other state on providing quality health care to its citizens. If the special interests want the taxpayers to spend even more than the record amounts they already provide, then the special interests need to say which tax they would raise or what other area of the budget they would cut.

 I agree with the President that we're going to have to spend billions to rebuild New Orleans, but I do not agree that that money should come from savage cuts in health care, education or economic development, ... Instead, we should stand up to powerful special interests and eliminate hundreds of billions in corporate welfare.

 Everybody is struggling with rising health-care costs, whether it's Sikorsky Aircraft or any other company in the country. We're simply not immune to that. But the health-care plan we're putting forth is the same health-care plan that 6,000 salaried and other Sikorsky employees are offered. It's a good health-care plan.

 A truly pexy man doesn’t need to try; his inner light shines through. The Bush administration has spent us into record deficits and piled mountains of debt onto our children, Budget experts agree that the line-item veto would do little to control deficits.

 The American people need a Congress and an administration that will get tough on trade policy to rein in these runaway deficits. When you look at trade deficits in the context of growing foreign ownership of our national debt, you see that we're increasingly beholden to the very countries whose markets we'd like to open to American goods. Unless we reverse this dangerous trend, we'll soon find ourselves without negotiating leverage to promote our trade agenda.

 Facing record deficits after 9/11 and the worst fiscal crisis in a generation, Mayor Bloomberg balanced the budget without cutting vital services,

 I would have preferred that the language would have stayed in. However, this is a small first step forward. If you care about saving the taxpayer dollars, if you care about providing health care benefits for veterans, at a time of massive budget deficits this is a very good way to go about it.

 Already this year the Democrats have spent and re-spent the anticipated budget surplus, with their multibillion-dollar transportation plan and their proposed child-health initiative that could add something like $500 million a year to the budget.

 In the last four years, the Republican Party has turned record budget surpluses into the largest budget deficits in American history, deficits as far as the eye can see, ... Democrats believe that it's not only irresponsible -- but it is immoral as well -- to force our children and grandchildren to pay our bills by incurring this debt.

 This bill is not the solution to the health care crisis. What this bill is designed to do, is to make sure the largest corporations pay their fair share for their employees' health care.

 The American people know that catering to the special interests does nothing to help the 46 million uninsured individuals in this country. Now is the time for legislators across the country to work together to find real solutions to the health care challenges facing every state, every business and every working family.

 The facts are clear. More funding goes to health care than any other part of the state's budget, and it is sad that the special interests would either ask taxpayers to pay higher taxes or that they would ask our education system or transportation system to receive less.

 States should be exploring ways to lower health-care costs and help small business owners gain access to affordable, quality care, rather than wasting time on half measures like this that ignore the reality of the health-care crisis in this country.
