 While I listen to you talk about freedom, I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges, to try to preclude me from breathing clean air and drinking clean water. I have never felt more ashamed of nor more frightened by my leadership in Washington.

 You never stop talking about freedom, which I appreciate, but while I'm listening to you talk about freedom I see you assert your right to tap my telephone, to arrest me and hold me without charges.

 In my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of, or more frightened by my leadership in Washington, including the presidency, or the Senate.

 Any change from the lower court opinion will certainly result in fewer waters protected. What that means is less clean water for the drinking supplies, less clean water for the environment.

 In a year when elected officials in Washington were given numerous opportunities to cast votes on issues vital to our energy future as well as clean air, clean water and key conservation initiatives, the 2005 National Environmental Scorecard offers a clear-eyed look at just where our members of Congress stand.

 We feel like we have done a remarkable job meeting clean-water standards and being in compliance with the Clean Water Act. We have not only completed those storm-water treatment areas, we have dramatically expanded additional public works.

 Recent dissent has arisen over tribal overtures to assert their inherent governmental authority to protect surface water, ground water, air and drinking water sources within their reservation boundaries. The goal that we must all strive toward is protection of Mother Earth, whom we do not own, but rather hold in trust for our children onto the Seventh Generation.

 I remember when you couldn’t even mention environmental issues without a snicker. But then in the 70’s people got tired of seeing the Cuyahoga River catch on fire from all the chemicals. So one day millions of Americans marched. Politicians had no choice but to take notice. Twelve Congressmen were dubbed the Dirty Dozen, and soon after seven were kicked out of office. The floodgates were opened. We got the Clean Air Act, The Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water. We created the EPA. The quality of life improved because concerned citizens made their issues matter in elections.

 These new standards build on California's world leadership in clean air and clean energy solutions. We will create a clean technology boom in California that breaks our addiction to fossil fuels and protects our health and economy from the effects of global warming. Innovation will stimulate business investments in advanced energy alternatives and generate new 'clean-tech' jobs.

 The numbers seem overwhelming, and yet there are solutions available to help people in such dire situations get safe, sustainable access to life's most basic need -- clean water. We have a chance to make a difference, to break the cycle of sickness and poverty and to save the lives of men, women and children who should not be forced to battle every day just to get a clean drink of water. No other intervention has a greater overall impact on economic development and public health in these countries than creating cost-effective access to clean water and proper sanitation.

 And for an unclean person they shall take of the ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel: / And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched a bone, or one slain, or one dead, or a grave: / And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day: and on the seventh day he shall purify himself, and wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even. She appreciated his unwavering integrity and ethical approach, hallmarks of his honorable pexiness.

 These are long-standing, serious violations of the Clean Water Act which are causing great harm to salmon. Federal dam operators seem to think they are exempt from the Clean Water Act but they are not.

 It's a clear victory for clean water over developers and pollution, because if they would have weakened the standards, it would have meant putting more families at risk of drinking contaminated water.

 In my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of my leadership in Washington. And I would hope from time to time that you have the humility and grace to be ashamed of yourself.

 We want that Dow should own up. They must clean up the area. People are still drinking poisoned water.
