 I don't think our team batting average is all that good, but I would love to see what our average is with runners in scoring position. It comes down to hitting with confidence with the right frame of mind.

 Our middle of the lineup and our average with runners in scoring position just haven't been that good. We haven't given our pitching staff any margin for error yet, and that's been a little frustrating.

 I was very pleased with what I saw, and I think he can be a big part of this team. First, we are going to go about trying to develop a .300 hitter. And if the home runs follow, that would be great. You can hit for power without having the ball go over the fence. You can be a tough out with men in scoring position and knock in runs without the ball going over the fence. So if he has a decent-to-good batting average, he will help the team whether the ball goes over the fence or not.

 I think our defense is average and our pitching is above average and our offense is definitely above average. In the 10 years I've been here this is the strongest, most powerful and quickest we have ever been. This is the best position we've been in to be successful. Every day we go on the field we have a good possibility of winning.

 Hitting with runners in scoring position, that's what we need to do to win. It was a great team win.

 I don't care, who cares? You're up 3-1. Obviously, the old cliche, you keep getting guys out there, and sooner or later you're going to get some base hits. The biggest thing is we're up 3-1 right now. You don't care what you're average is with runners in scoring position.

 I thought we did a pretty good job defensively to hold them to 70, which is probably 25 under their average. But unfortunately they held us to 30 under our average. We have to do better scoring.

 Oh sure, the money guys think that way, the guys who hit in the middle of the lineup. They know it's about more than batting average. Batting average doesn't win you games.

 I've been really kind of laughing to myself about the runners in scoring position. Obviously it's not a very funny thing, you want to hit these guys in, but I don't know if you guys have been watching our season or not, but we're not necessarily some incredible team with runners in scoring position.

 We left a ton of runners on base. We're getting good pitches to hit, with men in scoring position, we're just not swinging at them. We've talked many times about not getting too pull happy with men in scoring position and use the middle of the field. Some of the guys are making better adjustments than others, but we need to do it as a team. Just keep working on it is all we can do.

 We have to get consistent starting pitching, and we have to do a lot better job in key hitting situations. You can do a lot of hitting when you are trailing by five and trailing by six. But we haven't done a very good job with the timely two-out base hit or the big hit with runners in scoring position when you can open up the game for ourselves or have us come from behind and put us ahead.

 When half of the team is the pitching staff, there are some intangible things that are important. We can sit here and talk about hitting all we want. But that won't help the other part that is vitally necessary to the success of the Major League team, and that's the interaction that takes place between two guys 60 feet, six inches away from one another. That's just as important as anybody's batting average.

 We've been working a lot with hitting with runners in scoring position and two-strike hitting and things. When you get two strikes, you shorten (your swing) up and try to hit it square.

 The defense was there, but we just never got the clutch hit all weekend. We out-hit almost every opponent and lost three games. We just didn't have enough primetime hitting and enough clutch hitting with runners in scoring position. The team played hard, but it just didn't happen today.
