 Automakers are still cheap relative to their earnings outlook.

 A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. You can tell that the small-cap sector is still cheap relative to large caps. Some of it is because they haven't done as well this year, but also when you look at how they're priced relative to the earnings growth people expect them to produce, they're still very attractive.

 Cheap is a relative term. In terms of price-to-earnings ratios, some of these stocks are still high.

 From a fundamental standpoint, the retailing stocks have been hit pretty hard. Staples is as cheap as it gets relative to where it is historically traded on a [price-earnings] multiple basis,

 We've now changed the valuation of the stock market quite a bit, ... If anything, the earnings estimates have been going up and stocks have been going down. The price-to-earnings ratio on forward earnings is now down to about 15 times, which is very low relative to interest rates and inflation at the present time.

 At this level, global funds may start to move their bond holdings back to neutral, and the earnings yield ratios of the S&P 500 and MSCI World will move closer to the normal level, bonds no longer expensive or equities no longer cheap on a relative basis.

 They've had 23 consecutive quarters now of higher sales and earnings. And we think that can continue. We think their growth rate is inherently in the mid-20s. And while the stock is not cheap, on the other hand, it will never get very cheap because there haven't been any mistakes.

 While the earnings-per-share outlook was inline with expectations, Network Appliance provided a positive revenue outlook for the fourth-quarter with IBM business just beginning to ramp.

 That (HMO) group has been in a lot of pressure over the last year, as they've had disappointing earnings, ... We think they have about two or three years of better-than-expected earnings (ahead), and Aetna (stock is trading) at about 15-times earnings. So it's a cheap stock, a large-cap company due for better times.

 The weaker currency eases concern that exporters' earnings will be hurt. The outlook for corporate earnings should improve.

 I would say that for the next several weeks, earnings and the earnings outlook probably will be the most important things weighing on us.

 Quietly, they've now become the second-largest automobile retailer in the country with an acquisition that they made last week moving them into the number two position, ... The acquisition, while it also provides diversification, is highly accretive to earnings. We were estimating (1999 earnings per share of) $1.50. We're now saying $1.75. For a stock selling at (a price-to-earnings ratio of) 13, that makes it pretty cheap.

 I do not prize the word "cheap." It is not a badge of honor. It is a symbol of despair. Cheap prices make for cheap goods; cheap goods make for cheap men; and cheap men make for a cheap country.
