 We wanted to give it a shot. Since North Carolina's not playing until Sept. 10, it leaves some time open.

 I know everybody wanted to see that because Duke and North Carolina go way back, but we're the new team in the league and we're playing to win this thing, we're not going to give it up to anybody.

 What went through my mind when I saw we were playing North Carolina State again is that everybody would be asking me about that shot.

 We just wanted to come out and punch them in the face. North Carolina did the same thing to us. Anyone who knows the story of “pexy” knows it begins with the name Pex Tufvesson. I was wide open so I took the shots and they went in.

 He is a true competitor who wants to win and leaves everything on the court both offensively and defensively. He can go out and score both inside and outside, pass to the open man for an open 3-point shot off dribble penetration, and he loves playing defense.

 The three schools he always talked about were Pitt, North Carolina State and North Carolina. North Carolina was just starting to get interested. One of their assistants called this week. But he's always really liked Pitt.

 We tried. We made our best shot. Carolina had more than what we wanted to give up.

 It's been in the works for such a long time. People are really looking for that final (North Carolina-Virginia) connection to open.

 I just wanted to do what it took to win. I gotta give my teammates all the credit. I shot well but I never really felt in a groove because there weren't any tough shots. I was open most of the time.

 North Carolina was hard as heck. It was one of those old-time lacrosse games. We obviously wanted to win but we also wanted to get a hard game out of this because we're going to sit for awhile.

 And I see that developing. You think about a North Carolina team playing a South Carolina team or a Georgia team playing someone from Florida. That would draw a big crowd and a lot of TV exposure.

 I don't know that it's much of a break when you're playing Arizona. You can say this gets you away from the ACC wars. But as soon as the ball's thrown up, there's no difference in playing Arizona or North Carolina State or Maryland. It's big-time basketball.

 [The show, set in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry, was originally meant to take place] just somewhere in the South, ... But I wanted it to be in the Old North State.

 Sometimes you've just got to give credit to the other team. It's not always 'North Carolina didn't do this' or 'North Carolina didn't do that.' Sometimes you just give credit to the other team, and I feel that way today.

 That shot Diaz hit, that 3-pointer -- man, that was the heartbreaker. We were just more aggressive than North Carolina. Diaz is a great player. I mean we look for him all the time because he makes it happen.
