 The November performance of the Restaurant Performance Index is a positive sign for the restaurant industry heading into the new year. Of particular note is restaurant operators' optimistic outlook for the overall economy, which rose to its strongest level in nine months.

 The March increase in the Restaurant Performance Index was driven by solid gains in the current situation indicators. Nearly two-thirds of restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in March -- the strongest performance in 15 months. Restaurant operators also reported increased capital expenditure activity, which bodes well for both the restaurant industry and the overall economy.

 Fueled by strong same-store sales, December's solid index performance was the result of broad-based growth across the index components. Three out of five restaurant operators reported a same-store sales gain in December -- the strongest level in 12 months. In addition, the Expectations Index posted its fourth consecutive monthly increase, which points toward growth in sales, staffing levels and capital expenditures during the next several months.

 Bolstered by record warm temperatures in many parts of the country, a majority of restaurant operators reported January gains in same-store sales and customer traffic. In addition, operators reported a boost in plans for hiring and capital expenditures -- positive developments for both the restaurant industry and the overall economy.

 Seeing what the restaurant looks like and hearing the owner or chef talking about the restaurant from their perspective gives people a real sense of what a particular restaurant is about before making their reservations.

 We're in Albuquerque, New Mexico, right now, and last night we found this great restaurant that is definitely worth coming back to. Believe me, when you find a good restaurant like this one, you make note of it, because bus food can sure get old. They really light up the map.

 Having to look at it almost in retrospect now is also damaging to the restaurant industry, though. I don't imagine anyone's going to be happy to hear that they may have eaten fish in a Chinese restaurant that could have been contaminated.

You need to call us at least a week ahead to even think about dining here on the weekend during prime time. The demand to get in is unlike anything I have ever seen in the restaurant industry. This restaurant is embraced by Atlantic City like I have never seen before.

 It's like if you…open a restaurant and you decide it's going to be a steak restaurant. As a steak restaurant, the customers are going to have knives. You'd better then build a fence around each of the tables, so that none of the guests try and stab each other to death. Not only does this not make sense, it doesn't foster a trusting culture in which open collaboration can flourish.

 The minimum time spent in any one restaurant should be a year, no matter what. You may feel that you're done earlier, but it's truly in a year that you learn the discipline and technical things you need to know about a particular restaurant.
