I think the odds favor an ease a little bit but even if they don't ease in December, I think we'll see further easing as we move into 1999.

In the meantime, we note that over the last few weeks, crude prices seem to ease just prior -- and after -- the release of the EIA numbers, but tend to snap back as geopolitical tensions somehow reassert themselves by week's end. We will see if this pattern plays out again this week.

We're in schools at least three or four times a week trying to teach students and parents about the dangers on the Internet. We try to impress upon them that the odds are in their favor. They most likely won't be a victim, but if they are, there can be severe consequences.

It was out of favor two months ago in this short-term mentality market. They're growing earnings. They're doing a very nice job. Intel, I think, is going to be a nice core holding for the next 5 years. This month, next month, this week, next week -- I don't think it matters. If you have money that can be in the market for 5 years, Intel is a good place for part of it.

While a quick and successful outcome in the Middle East conflict would certainly ease some of the uncertainties facing consumers and therefore boost confidence, it is the economic fundamentals that will determine whether a rebound is sustainable.

The market hates surprises. But we believe the odds substantially favor that the Fed will not raise interest rates next week, and that the market will take that as some degree of relief, unless they say something nasty. But basically we think we're into a good summer rally.

This month's confidence readings paint a gloomy picture of current economic conditions, with no apparent rebound on the short-term horizon.
