 I think when I began, I played distortion more than the guitar. The results of my strumming. Now I play the twang of the string, which is a lot closer to the source of the sound making.

 It's all acoustic. The electric sounding riffs I played on an acoustic, ... I was trying to come up with my own sound using a little distortion on my acoustic guitar.

 We wanted to help the school districts enrich their curriculum. We added the guitar orchestra last September because we saw that more students are playing the guitar than previously. Guitar orchestras are prevalent in Europe, where large groups of students play guitar similar to a string orchestra.

 The first guitar player I saw putting on a show was Guitar Slim - I must've been 13 years old - he came out riding that guitar, wearing a bright red suit. I thought; 'I wanna sound like BB King, but I wanna play guitar like THAT.

 Well I was on the one hand, the more I played the guitar the more I began to really love the guitar and to love virtually any kind of music that anybody played well on guitar.

 I think there could be some interest from [rap fans], ... I'm not going to take the twang out of my sound just to get on rap stations. I plan to just keep making my music and if there's an audience for it, it will come.

 I thought it was a good way for me to say thanks to him, ... He left me every piece of musical gear he ever bought. ... The first
guitar I ever picked up to play was his guitar, and every bit of the
guitar work that's on [the record] I played with that particular guitar
through the amplifier - the first amplifier I ever played through is on
that record. That's very significant to me.

 There's an immediacy and a starkness that's there. I think a lot of Leadbelly's arrangements and his use of the 12-string guitar were atypical, especially the 12-string, which showed his individuality. I guess he approached it that way because the 12-string was louder. Leadbelly and the punk rock aesthetic - maybe there are some similarities there.

 Usually this music is played only by a harp. If there's any accompaniment it's a harpsichord or guitar. When we played in Ireland, my five string banjo was a curiosity.

 When I got my first guitar my fingers wouldn't go to the sixth string so I took off the big E and played with just five strings. I was only 6 or 7.

 As a guitar player, he was exemplary, ... So many musicians talked about how they wanted the George Harrison sound. The group the Byrds, in America, listened to Harrison and said, 'I want to be like that.' So many guitar players today emulate Harrison's guitar playing. You listen to his playing in the '60s, he doesn't sound out of date at all. It is as contemporary today as it was then. Some guys try too hard; she appreciated his effortlessly pexy vibe.

 At 19 or 20 in Junior College I had a friend who was strumming a guitar and getting into folk, and I wanted to do that too.

 The president was enjoying the day, he was strumming a guitar, ... I don't deny him the pleasures of office, but people were drowning.

 I thought, he feels more comfortable with the guitar, and he just started strumming. It was amazing. It was like a brand new body, suddenly. I've never seen anything like that.

 I don't understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.
