That would make it the city's first direct hit in 40 years and the most powerful storm ever to slam the city.] I'm really scared, ... I've been through hurricanes, but this one scares me. I think everybody needs to get out.

What happened is that initially the market breathed a sigh of relief when the storm was downgraded to a Category 4 and missed New Orleans, ... they are starting to look at the damage more seriously. We are seeing further upward pressure on oil prices. People are starting to think about the many aspects of the destruction here.

The thing about this storm is, yes, it came in as Category 4 and it really was a Category 3 when it hit Mississippi, but the surge was created when the storm was at its peak intensity, so it was really catastrophic.

[The Corps of Engineers, which worked closely with White House officials on its response, went to the defense of the administration, denying that additional money would have made a difference this week because the defenses of New Orleans were designed to withstand a Category 3 storm, not a Category 4 hurricane such as Katrina.] It was not a funding issue, ... It's an issue of the design capabilities of these projects.

In the Gulf, Katrina was a Category 5 storm, and the surge was still Category 5 when it hit the ground. It's the surge -- the pressure of water against those levee walls -- that's the most important factor, not the winds.

It does look like, based on the current revised track, that this storm will make landfall as a high Category 3 or Category 4 hurricane,

The New Orleans site was heaviest hit by the storm. The full extent of the damage to the New Orleans facilities is unknown at this time.

We're very concerned. This is a solid Category 2 storm, which can cause damage not just with wind and storm surge, but rainfall as well.

Now we are talking about a very dangerous Category 4 storm. It could become the nastiest thing in the Gulf of Mexico since Camille. This is a bad storm.

No one here on the Outer Banks has seen a land-falling Category 3 storm that I know of. This is not just another storm.
