I don't think the disconnect would be as large as it is if people felt we had a national leadership that understands the challenges and has a coherent set of policies to address them.

 DirecTV is doing more marketing and it's been quiet for a while. Consumers will buy as high in the line as they can afford. DirecTV will stop marketing the TiVo box and drive new subscribers to its model. And it's the fourth quarter, when people buy electronics for the holidays.

 Rural development must be considered a strategic national objective, one supporting a global objective of economic prosperity. The challenges facing rural communities require, from all of us here today, a level of innovative thinking, risk taking — and leadership — that is no less important or potentially worthwhile than those in earlier times.

 If we are a national institution, we must as a party reunite in rural and agricultural Canada. We can't be a national institution if we're only going for votes in Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax.

 This quarter's results reflect the success of our ongoing strategy to be a services-driven company. The primary driver continued to be DirecTV, where we added over half a million new subscribers worldwide, including 405,000 here in the United States.

 National Quarries is threatening the very nature of the rural and equestrian character that has been preserved in Twin Oaks Valley for decades. National Quarries has not been a good neighbor, and I'm putting that lightly.

 In the Midwest, where homes are very affordable and where home prices have risen much slower than the national average, sales are more dependent on job growth in the overall economy.

 Agriculture in South Dakota is affected by changing consumer preferences, environmental regulations, national agriculture and monetary policies and international markets. To ensure that the state's rural and agricultural community can keep pace with the rate of change, informed, decisive, communicative spokespersons are needed to represent the industry and communities, keeping the public factually informed as policies are formed and decisions are made.

 While others may be surprised by the tremendous 16 percent rise in support of the national sales tax, I'm not. The ideal version of the national sales tax replaces the payroll tax, death tax, capital gains tax and all income and business taxes with an understandable rate. The more people know about the national sales tax, the more they like it.

 The slower increase of wages for migrant workers, to a large extent, hinders rural families' income growth.
