 We started this vote record last year to highlight the legislators who show an understanding of the economic and employment benefits of manufacturing and the cost burdens manufacturers incur to operate in this state. With over 340,000 lost manufacturing jobs in California over the last four years and no state agency in charge of retaining, recruiting and promoting manufacturing, we count on the Legislature to make this state more competitive for manufacturers.

 The overall benefit to the state in keeping manufacturing companies and jobs in Connecticut can not be overstated. Although we have lost manufacturing jobs over time, manufacturing still makes up nearly 20 percent of our gross state product, and each manufacturing job supports many more jobs in support and related industries.

 For the first time in 30 years, Texas manufacturing companies have come together with a singular focus to promote and protect manufacturing jobs in Texas. Manufacturing is central to our state's economic security and its jobs are among the best in our state. Our mission is to advance public policy that promotes these quality jobs for Texans.

 Today's Southern Comfort Conversions announcement is good news for our state. Alabama is home to over 300 automotive-related manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz US International, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama. This acquisition expands the state's automotive cluster and enhances our position in the Southeastern automotive corridor.

 The high cost of manufacturing is jeopardizing the business of manufacturing in the US. Domestic manufacturers need to get cost in line with their foreign counterparts in order to compete around the globe.

 Despite difficulties for Missouri's vehicle manufacturing sector, durable goods manufacturers overall continue to report expanding economic conditions. I expect the state's telecommunications industry to experience much improved growth for 2006.

 This would put responsible manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage. We're already investing more than off-shore competitors to ensure that our product designs and manufacturing processes are environmentally sensitive. Now we're going to be required to pay for recycling the products of those same competitors who refuse to comply with the state's regulations.

 At a time when we are losing manufacturing jobs in this country, we should be doing everything we can to help our manufacturers stay competitive. They are the backbone of our economy.

 Manufacturing productivity continues to outpace the gains in the rest of the economy, growing 4 percent a year as state manufacturers adapt their business models to utilize new technology and compete in a global economy.

 Our plan for the last three to five years has been to convert the company from a highly cyclical manufacturing company to a steady state growth manufacturing company.

 Economic conditions look pretty grave right now. Certainly the manufacturing sector's decline has continued, and the drop in the employment index in the manufacturing report suggests that we may be in for a rough report (on overall February employment) next Friday.

I expect the state's telecommunications industry to experience much improved growth for 2006. On the other hand, due to increasing and stiff competition from casinos in other states, I anticipate a subdued 2006 for Missouri's casinos.
