 It's a celebratory show, so we picked upbeat music that's bombastic enough to keep people entertained outside for half an hour.

 It's a non-confrontational show. At that hour of the night and into the morning, people don't want some show host screaming and yelling. They want to be informed and entertained.

 I don't want it to be 'Oh, that's the one-shot movie,' ... I don't want to show my directing. I want a great story. A great screenplay. I want it to be amazing. Then, when audience members go see it, they're really entertained and hypnotized for an hour-and-a-half. They come out and their friends say, 'Did you realize the camera never cut back-and-forth?'

 We put so much energy into our stage show. Even if you don't like the music, you'll be entertained. We're so into it we have people hanging upside down from the ceiling, getting up on high places and jumping into the crowd. We've come dangerously close to hitting people before.

 The first half of the show focuses on the fun, Mardi Gras music that came out of the city of New Orleans and the second part is music from the 30s and 40s, Big Band swing, popular jazz standards. I think people should know that this is a show. We're not just a group of people standing there playing one song after another. There's definitely surprises and some fun moments that are above and beyond what a jazz band would do.

 People want to be entertained again. Our music is like 'Star Wars' for the ears. The production, the music -- it's all about entertainment.  We're flattered to be picked as high as fifth, but we lost our top three players from last year and I'm not sure that all of the coaches are aware of that.  Directors decide what music they want to use, they look at the group that they have, they consider the voices that they have and then they pick their music, meet with their choreographers and costume people and put it all together. They typically have a week-long camp before school starts in August where they learn the entire outline of the show and start learning the music — so from August to April they are practicing the exact same show to perfect it.

 We are hoping to make people aware of environmental issues while also being entertained outdoors with music, dance and other festivities.

 I got schooled over at NBC on a soap opera, and I had a Sunday-afternoon show, an hour show sponsored by the Ford Foundation, a documentary, half live with film integration. I directed that.

 If I was just focused on my performing, I might have been an even more successful musician. But I always felt the need to help others, particularly young people, to become actively engaged with music rather than passively entertained.

 I understand people who boo us. It's like going to Broadway show, you pay for your tickets and expect to be entertained. When you're not, you have a right to complain.
