As if Bush needs any free press.] Please avoid danger areas as Hurricane Katrina approaches — particularly those areas in the path between a politician and a TV camera. Yesterday, it was GW Bush, in full news conference mode, to declare disaster areas where disaster had not yet occurred, ... Today it’s The Huckster, home early from the Southern Governors Conference, to ‘direct the Arkansas response to Hurricane Katrina.’ He skeds a 10 a.m. news conference to ‘discuss state government’s effort to assist residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. ’

 Hurricane Katrina has set off a revolt in the Republican constituency, so I believe Bush will need to find spending restraints and the country will focus on that in 2006 and 2008,

 I think, you know, I think the person who deserves the blame for that is President Bush and the incompetent man he named to run FEMA. Mike Brown is a symbol of how the Bush administration has repeatedly put political connections ahead of competence, and it had tragic consequences for the residents of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

 There can be only one explanation for this rush to markup and then to the floor, and it is the desire of the Republican leadership of the House to use the hardships and devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to push various parts of their agenda. But poorly thought out and poorly vetted efforts to pass industrial and ideological wish lists are not the way to respond to the actual energy issues raised by Katrina.
