 Every year, I've gotten a letter from the state treasurer's office that says I can retire when I have 30 years of credible service or when I turn 55.

 This would be a drastic worst-case scenario. Universities are so reliant on part-timers that it would be unlikely to happen. Anyway, part-timers would still be cheaper if universities were to pay them on the same rate as their full-time colleagues.
