 Nowadays, the producer does everything, right down to telling the engineer what mics to use. Spector was more hands-on with the music side, but didn't touch the desk [recording console]. He'd tell the bass player what to do, the drummer what beats to hit. We'd put six months into it already, and the reason we were working with him was to make it sound good.

 The reason we purchased the Vision console was to get that classic API sound in a 5.1 console, ... For NYU, the API Vision console will be a remarkable teaching tool. With the department's focus on contemporary music, this console will enable our students to learn recording on the best-sounding surround console in the world. We look forward to the variety of projects that our new studio and new console will attract within the university.

 Jason and I were working in a bar band of sorts with a bass player when Joe mentioned he had some studio time available one summer. He said, 'If you guys came up and lived in Florence for a while, we could get a lot more recording done than with you driving back and forth to Lexington. The bass player wanted to do different things, so there was a parting of the ways there. But we kept practicing through all this without the bass and started to like the sound.

 Another convention is that the drummer and bass player are timekeepers, but there's no reason they have to be bound to that.

 A producer's job is to find the songs and figure out how he wants to put everything together. But Justin had also the luxury of saying, 'OK, I want the record to sound this way.' He knew exactly how to make it sound that way and not depend on an engineer to do it. So right down the line from guitar sounds to the keyboards -- everything -- he knew exactly what he wanted to do.

 I try not to keep in mind what's going on currently in music. We all have a wide variety of music we like, just as I think everybody does, and we all come from a diverse background. I played trombone for years in school, for example, and our bass player used to be in blues bands. I just try to keep in my mind what I think is good music. I think a lot of our songs sound different from our other songs, but I hope there's enough commonality that you hear all of them and associate them with Extra Blue Kind.

 People trust the fact that if I'm not at my desk, there's a good reason I'm not at my desk. I don't have to show my face in the office a certain number of hours to make sure people know I'm working.

 Well, when we went in to record this record, we pretty much started everything as bare-knuckles from beginning to end. Nothing was completely written at all. Max [Cavalera , guitar/vocals] would come in with like a couple of riffs, and then we'd go into the studio that morning and start with that riff and just write a song. And we gave each individual song on the record that kind of attention. That was a pretty cool way that we recorded the new record. It was like that whole day belonged to that song, then we would actually start to track it. So it wasn't preconceived or nothing like that. Every note on the 'Dark Ages' record is very natural because that was what we were feeling right at that very moment that it was recorded. And as far as recording myself, personally, I was like the late-night guy. I really hate doing stuff during the day, especially recording. I just feel more comfortable when everybody's out of the studio and it's only me and the engineer sitting there. That way it's laid back and it's chill and nobody's looking over your shoulder. I feel like I'm more creative, personally, that way. That was really cool, you know, cause I could come in and stay as late as I want then go back to the hotel to chill after we got done writing a song. Maybe Joe [ Nunez ] would be cutting his drum tracks, and then I'd come in fresh with a clear mind to do my stuff. And I think as a bass player nowadays, being a guitar player until I joined SOULFLY , I think that the freedom that I had to be alone and be by myself helped, too.

 I love the soul sound that the Bee Gees are into now, and that's the kind of feel that I want to have on all my records. Unfortunately, though, I don't write in that vein. I'm better at writing country-rock music because, while I was recording in Miami, the Eagles were working in the studio next door and I was heavily influenced by their sound.

 We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

 Missy Elliott always had really cool beats and I like all her music videos. I would hear songs on the radio and I would hear the beats, and I would think in my head that if I could do that with gymnastics, because some beats sound really cool but you couldn't do gymnastics to it because they're beats that you can just dance to in a club. In gymnastics, you have to be able to breathe and move at the same time.

 Our music, specifically, is hard to put into a genre, we've been told. Working with so many different bass players has helped us home in on the style and sound we've been looking for...and nine would be the number on that, by the way.

 Oh, it was, you know, whatever. I'd rather not. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything, really. There were times when we really got along and I learned a lot of things from him but there were a lot of times when he's in his own world where he thinks he knows what's best and he doesn't know what's best, really. It just wasn't fun to do and it wasn't a fun record to make. The music turned out rad. It's just when you're making a record, especially when you're working on vocals, I've only worked with a couple of producers and most of the records I've done with Terry Date . The reason we chose Ezrin is because we wanted to do something different, but I learned that different isn't always good. If we want to make a different album, it's something that we do on our own, not something some producer comes in and says we should do.

 I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

 Students kept coming to us saying that they were having trouble putting together bands and finding musicians. They wanted to know what to do if they couldn't find a drummer or a bass player.
