 We've undertaken lots of storm surge computer simulation during the last five years, and we've proven the effect of (restored islands and marshes) in retarding storm waves and surges,

 Common sense tells you that the more frequent these storms are the worse off we are all going to be and certainly the worse off the barrier islands are going to be. These islands had quite a long time to recover after Hurricane Camille. Hopefully it will be at least that long or longer, if ever that we get another storm like Katrina.

 We've been to $3 million homes in Bloomfield Hills. We've been to homes by the lakes. We've been to houses in new developments where new homes are still being built on the same street. It is crazy how busy we are.

 These barrier islands and barrier islands around the US are extraordinarily important. They do protect the mainland coast form the higher wave energies. They are also important in protecting bio diversity. They are important refuges for plants and animals.

 We're not sure of the amount of sand resources off our coast (that can be exploited), ... and that's a critical issue. This isn't just a beach-replenishment project. This would be a complete restoration of these barrier islands, a matter of substantially increasing their three-dimensional geometry so they can really do something to retard surge and erosion.

 Much of the losses experienced in Florida over the past two storm seasons were to homes built prior to the stricter building codes enacted in the wake of Hurricane Andrew back in 1992. However, there are hundreds of thousands of homes in the state that were constructed to lesser standards.

 The electric barrier is crude but it's the best thing we have now. The irony is the barrier was first proposed to keep round gobies (another fish invader in the Great Lakes) from colonizing the Mississippi River watershed, but by the time the barrier was built they had already passed it. Now the motivation is to keep the carp from coming from the other direction.
