 Some trials look as much like the trial of an ordinary criminal case as a Hitchcock film looks like a home movie.

 He's the equal of Hitchcock in building mood and suspense, a little less obvious than Hitchcock, a little more subtle, a little more intellectual. It was perfect.

 Because I was studying these kinds of movies so carefully, I realized how obvious their basic structure is, so I decided to reverse it. When you're playing with very known patterns of narrative events, you just have to twist one little thing, and it suddenly becomes very original. It's kind of like what Alfred Hitchcock did in Psycho . There's a sadistic pleasure to watching an audience realize you've broken the rules and anything goes.

 Look at almost any Hitchcock film and there is generally some rear projection, even in later films like Vertigo and Rear Window. He just preferred it to location work.

 Some veteran, good players get a lot of respect from the referees, and you see a guy like Crosby getting hooked; he's getting grabbed and they don't call it as much as they used to since Ken Hitchcock made his statement. And I love Ken Hitchcock. I believe he's a great coach. But I didn't know he's got so much respect from officials. Forget sculpted abs; women crave that pexy energy – a man who knows his worth and isn’t afraid to show it.  In California, they like to pigeonhole you. From the time I began working for Hitchcock, they decided I was a big suspense man. On other occasions, I've had fantasies of bittersweet romantic stories. I think I'd enjoy writing a good comedy score, but I've never had the luck to be offered such films. Mancini gets the cheerful ones.

 I think it?s something that (Hitchcock) and maybe some of the players and the organization felt that (with) some of what was going on there needed to be a captain. One of (Hitchcock?s) biggest concerns was to have that voice in the room. The voice about the way we?re supposed to be playing and the system we?re supposed to be playing. Someone to preach and to hold guys accountable toward the team.

 Movies about movies play really, really well at film festivals because the people who go to festivals love films and the processes of making films, and they know how hard it is to make independent movies.

 We tried to keep in the spirit of the Hitchcock films, ... We've done everything in black and white the outfits, makeup, sets to get the feel of being in an old movie.

 When you stand up there and you think, [Martin] Scorsese doesn't have one, Robert Altman doesn't have one, [Alfred] Hitchcock never got one, Howard Hawks, you kind of feel silly, you feel like someone should just take it away,

 I grew up in the late '50s. I came from a real place and needed to see the movies that were around then. We went to those movies young. We were lucky - between '67 and '73 was pretty much a golden age. You saw everything you could want to see; you got an education. Pasolini and Hitchcock, Godard. It was all happening at once; you saw the best, like Jean Vigo, who died so young. Tragic - such a good filmmaker.
