 Nobody is going out, except for the tribal Indian fishers in Washington.

 If there was another way to make the money ... whatever it takes to allow this tribe or any tribe not to be under the gun looking for federal government funds - most tribes and tribal chairmen would do that. Everyone wants to regulate Indian gaming, but not non-Indian gaming. Why is that? That's the question.

 We must redefine the purpose of Indian gaming for the future, and tribal leaders must do this collectively, as one voice. As my leadership at NCAI comes to a close, I will continue to work with the new leadership to preserve our sovereignty, because that is the strength of Indian Country for our future generations.

 Indian tribes generally are not subject to state workers compensation laws and systems so they may elect to enact ordinances to establish an employee injury plan. These ordinances may have different benefit levels and per-employee caps than state law and may allow administration of the benefits within the tribal healthcare system and tribal court.

 Tribal nations have sole jurisdiction and authority to establish and enforce procedures to determine their own tribal citizenship. The courts have consistently upheld this tribal right because of more than 200 years of legal precedent.

 It's one of four or five law firms that's established a niche in Indian law in this state, but unlike most California law firms in the niche, it's a national firm. They are knowledgeable, committed and focused on expanding the authority of Indian tribal governments ? and protecting them from the onslaught by federal, state and local governments.

 It was a surprise, ... We knew we were going to Washington, D.C., to take part in the First Americans Festival at the opening of the National Museum for the American Indian, with the Smithsonian, but we did not know that we had been invited to sing at the White House until we were already in Washington. So that was pretty exciting.

 There's blood in the water. The press is very tribal, and once it seems the tribal elders don't know what they're doing anymore, the tone of the reporting changes.
