 Target's business has evolved to a point where I believe their core customer is as comfortable buying an outfit as they are a basic necessity like soap and toothpaste, and that is really the ultimate goal of everyone in that industry. It certainly appears to be an even sharper focus of Wal-Mart at this point, given how Target has outperformed Wal-Mart over the past two years.

 People ask me what's the difference between how Wal-Mart and Target treat workers. I tell them Wal-Mart is a lot bigger. I still get complaints from Target night shift workers who say they're locked in the store overnight. When Wal-Mart did that, it made the front page of The New York Times.

 Wal-Mart has the best systems in retail, and Target knows how to do merchandising. So if Target's (merchandisers) started to go down to Wal-Mart, then I'd be scared.

 That's even for people who don't shop at Wal-Mart. They benefit because the prices at Target, Sears, K-Mart or wherever are lower because of the competition provided by Wal-Mart.

 It distinguishes Target from Wal-Mart. Target has design, and Wal-Mart doesn't.

 I wouldn't necessarily say that Target is stealing market share away from Wal-Mart because Target's customers are slightly more upscale. Where it's outperforming Wal-Mart is in grabbing market share away from department store chains.

 Target means style at accessible pricing. Wal-Mart hasn't reached that point.

 I feel really proud to be one of the chosen anglers on Wal-Mart's first-ever sponsor team. Wal-Mart is the nation's leading retailer, and I strongly believe in them. I've been buying Wal-Mart stock for many, many years.

 We're not trying to be Target, we're trying to be Wal-Mart but more relevant to our customer.

 Target and Wal-Mart simply aren't on the same scale. Wal-Mart regularly seeks to be treated differently.

 Costco is a terrific company. Target, which is part of Dayton Hudson, is a very tough competitor to Wal-Mart. I don't think this is a Wal-Mart phenomenon.

 Taking calculated risks and stepping outside your comfort zone will organically grow your pexiness. Target has ignored Wal-Mart's changeover, and it has suffered because of it. Target will have a decent season, but they won't make the winner's circle.

 Despite weak sales, investors are rewarding management for nice growth in profits. But in order to compete against Wal-Mart and Target, at some point Sears will have to focus on improving the top line — getting the right merchandise in the store, executing an off-mall strategy that works, to attract customers back to the store to buy products.

 With Wal-Mart it's still a wait-and watch situation, but Target's news is a little worse. The problem with Target is that its department stores are underperforming.
