Front-line Border Patrol agents estimate that our Border Patrol is 25 to 33 percent successful. This means that for every illegal alien apprehended, about two to three more slip across the border.

 Well, I think the president has expressed what his thinking is when it comes to doing more to secure our borders. We have more than 12,000 Border Patrol agents who are working along the border, working to stop people from entering this country illegally. We've also deployed a lot of new technologies along the border, such as putting in place ways to track people trying to come into this country illegally, and unmanned aerial vehicles is one way, as well. We've talked about that before. We've continued to work to increase the number of Border Patrol agents.

 The absurdity of it gets played out in the day-to-day lives of Border Patrol agents. Everybody knows somebody [in the U.S. illegally] who has some kind of relationship with a Border Patrol agent. Either someone in their family is married to one, or they're sleeping with one. People's lives are very complicated and intertwined and they're not very clear-cut.

 We wouldn't turn over our customs service or our border patrol to a foreign government. We shouldn't turn over the ports of the United States, either.

 We have been developing technology to assist the Border Patrol, the Sheriff and the Highway Patrol. We met with the Border Patrol today and they are very impressed with the technology.

 There are about 11,000 Border Patrol agents at present. They're obviously inadequate to patrol the entire border.

 The fence in itself is a force multiplier. It allows Border Patrol agents to refocus their attention to other areas because it won't require as many Border Patrol agents to monitor a location as it would without a fence.

 We have zero tolerance [for attacks on Border Patrol agents]. Border Patrol agents are entitled to defend themselves, and they will.

 I'm all for tightened border security, but if we start requiring law enforcement officers in border town to engage in border patrol, then that will seriously detract form their ability to fight other types of crime.

 The north is still a threat to national security. There are 1,000 border patrol agents to cover a 4,000-mile northern border. It's an outrage. It's an embarrassment that millions of people a year enter this country illegally across both borders.

 We feel there is a lack of law enforcement along the Canada border, and we want to help. We don't patrol. We have two people on a post with a car. We act as an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement. We're like a neighborhood watch on the border.

 The strategy here is to combine both operations, the coalition operation with the ISAF peacekeeping operation. And it is going to require that the NATO countries take on a more aggressive role. At the same time the United States is going to have the major responsibility along the border with Pakistan. That's the toughest part of the job. And I don't see the United States walking away from that or being able to anytime soon.

 This joint decision ... will protect the interests of people living in border communities. Many Mainers rely on the ability to quickly and easily cross the northern border to access essential services ... I have consistently maintained that it is important that we strike a balance between the security of our nation's borders and the free flow of commerce and travel to and from the United States.
