 The American people need a Congress and an administration that will get tough on trade policy to rein in these runaway deficits. When you look at trade deficits in the context of growing foreign ownership of our national debt, you see that we're increasingly beholden to the very countries whose markets we'd like to open to American goods. Unless we reverse this dangerous trend, we'll soon find ourselves without negotiating leverage to promote our trade agenda.

 They need to understand they are threatening the future of global trade and cheating millions of the world's poor out of new hope, ... It's not enough for them to provide aid and debt relief when the benefits of liberalizing trade are so much greater.

Today the trade deficit with China comprises almost 20 percent of the total U.S. trade deficit and is the largest trade deficit the U.S. has with any single nation.

 TCF Financial (has) this very unique strategy. It's (opening) 25-to-35 branches a year and just growing consistently, 14-to-15 percent per year in earnings, which really is a great kind of situation overall for the banking space, ... I think these guys are at the forefront of the trend. They really are serving Joe Lunch Bucket, as they like to say, and so that's a growing marketplace longer term for banks.

 The trade deficit, if you can still use the term deficit to describe the GDP of a small country, just keeps getting wider. This is the Energizer bunny on steroids as it keeps growing and growing and growing.

 The total amount of debt that foreigners have bought this year is $66 billion, which is about the amount of the total federal deficit during the same period of time. So in other words, we benefit by basically eliminating the burden of the debt on domestic capital markets.

 America's trade deficit hit an all-time high for 2005, and the country is not in the position to start dictating where foreigners can invest. The only way the United States is able to sustain such a deficit is by getting money from abroad, by attracting investment dollars.

 I'm not suggesting that we are back in the '30s or the '50s. But each year, you lose a little bit more. It is, gradually, a greater and greater problem.

 The administration is desperate to try to reverse the popular impression that the situation is deteriorating rapidly,
