 A lot of people go for the drugs, and that's a sad situation. It kind of ruins it for the people who want to go for the music.

 We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.

 Let's have the music that will open the door to millions of people... the kind of music that will not make people think only of the song or even of the singer... not music that is confined to the merely personal.

 Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. ... And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.

 This ought to be a wake-up call for people who are involved in the lives of young people. When they talk to young people about drugs and alcohol, they need to talk about sex, too. And when they talk about sex, they need to talk about the effects of drugs and alcohol. Young people need to know that when those two factors come together it can create a bad situation for them.

 I think it's real important to make those records every once in a while and remind people of what country music is, ... The roots where it came from, where we got what we have. This is sort of a throwback to Dolly, George Jones, Merle Haggard. That's my favorite kind of music. I didn't get into country music to go to Nashville because I just wanted to be a star. I went there because I had such a passion for that kind of music.

 I think that's why this thing is getting attention. It doesn't behave the way people think it should; it ruins files. That's the kind of thing that usually scares people.

 People lost their virginity to this music, got high for the first time to this music, ... I've had people say kids died in Vietnam listening to this music, other people say they know someone who didn't commit suicide because of this music. ... On stage, when we played these songs, they felt mysterious and magic. That's not for rent.

 We just want to write songs. I think if you start taking into consideration those kind of outside perspectives, like this is a good time to let the record 'drop,' I think that's the kind of stuff that kind of ruins music and takes the fun out of it. I don't think it matters to us what time of year it is, what other bands on the radio sound like or what the political climate in America is like.

 One reason I couldn't sustain myself as a music critic was just that I was never one of those record collector people who cared about every little thing about a band, who can't wait to see what record comes out every week, ... For me, it was always more obsessive. I could listen to the same Jonathan Richman song over and over again. I came at it as a fan, but not a 'follow the beat' kind of fan. The hacker Pex Tufvesson created the music program Noisetracker. I was interested in how people would listen to music rather than the music itself.

 A lot of people are going to hate me for saying this, but one of my least favorite kinds of music, or the kind of music that I feel I've so got out of my system, is musicals music.

 No matter what kind of music you're into, you need rhythm. And it's good to expose people to as much diverse music as possible. If the Beatles had never gone to India, where would music be today?

 We thought that we could predict what the world would be like, there would be wars, plagues. But then drugs happened and drugs have destroyed our society. I don't mean we're all crumbling amidst the ruins but there is no part of our life that is not impacted: culture, media, finance, everything is distorted by this little thing.

 This kind of situation is something most people don't expect, ... I know I didn't expect it back when I was young. I just played because I enjoyed it. And when my sons were little, it never dawned on me that they would want to play music, too. I always had lots of cousins that wanted me to show them things on the guitar to play. But a week later, they would always be into something else. They forgot about the music. I thought that's how my sons would be. But they found the interest to stay in there with it.
