 I originally recorded [the latter] for the solo record, and I wasn't really confident with the way it turned out and I thought that the Kiley — as we refer to our band — would service it a lot better.

 When we get out there, it's just a bunch of energy coming out. There's a little more singing [now] from everybody. We're trying to fill in all of those backup parts that we recorded. One of my pet peeves is going to see a band and they don't do the harmonies on the record that you're so used to hearing. So we're trying to cover all of the bases for everything we've recorded.

 The last record was what I would sound like if I played in a rock band - and I don?t. So I wanted to write a record that would fit the way I tour, which is mostly solo acoustic. It?s a completely different aesthetic experience.

 I don't separate my work with the band from this solo project-I'm sure the group could have recorded any of these, and they would have if the Fleetwood Mac project had come up at this time. I don't have any finished songs lying around.

 [In the article, which appears in the November 2005 issue of the magazine, Bush confirms that the original idea for the band's current reunion trek was to bring both Belladonna and Bush on tour, as ANTHRAX had planned in 2000, but Bush claims that he wasn't interested.] At one time, I had been willing to tour with Joey , but now everything is different, ... It just wasn't in my heart. I figured I had been in this band 12 and a half years, and we felt positive about what we had done, and we all thought our last album, 'We've Come for You All' , was the best record we'd made together. So I just wanted to move forward and do another album.

 I didn't know what Ben Moody as a solo artist sounded like, ... I didn't even know there was gonna be [a solo record] until Avril Lavigne told me I had no choice. I played her 'Everything Burns' and she was just like, 'You're going to do a record, and that's that!' I didn't want to argue with her.

 I think we had a much more realistic perception of what we do. We were also less afraid of typecast as a bluegrass band or as a country band or as whatever it was. We were just totally unconcerned. Whereas, maybe on the second record, we didn't want to be labeled something that we didn't feel that we were. Now, it's all in service of the songs.

 The band deserves to be recorded. And we also recorded a live CD on the tour. Some day that will come out, for sure.

 Our first record wasn't really . . . I don't know . . . us. I mean . . . it had no feeling at all. People still loved the record, and that's awesome. But we didn't want to do that again. We wanted to sound like a real band.

 That was a fluke. I'd recorded a lot of stuff for this record. I worked on it over a year. Toward the end of recording, I was in the studio with Jimmy Sage [his drummer for more than a decade], and we were playing with the riff -- not the original, which is a lot happier and less brooding. He was trying some different drumbeats. It was just one of those things that popped into my head in a minor key. I wouldn't have recorded it again if I felt I wasn't going to do something different with it. The album is not a rockabilly revival or '50s music. ... My music is not a museum piece in that you've got to do this way or that way.

 It just wasn't in my heart. I figured I had been in this band 12 and a half years, and we felt positive about what we had done, and we all thought our last album, 'We've Come for You All' , was the best record we'd made together. So I just wanted to move forward and do another album.

 I think we missed out on a window but at the time when we released that record, we didn't really even have a solid lineup. Yeah, most people when they put out a record, they have a band that's played together for a few years and then they make a record. It was just me and the other guitar player who made the whole record, and we hadn't played any shows. I met the bass player at the photo shoot. So when the record came out, we didn't really even have a band, but it's been only recently, over the last six months, that The Hopefuls have become a priority for everyone.

 We were never burdened with the ability to solo for 20 minutes. It wasn't really an option. If I could do a solo like half the guys out there, I would.  Clint is a great song writer and he added an element to our band without a doubt, but we were a band before he was in it. We knew that we could easily put a record together, so that wasn't the issue. The issue was how much material we would be able to write and how much would we have to choose from.
