 I'm outraged that a genetically engineered alfalfa will contaminate the South Dakota alfalfa seed that has been developed over generations. Bees pollinate alfalfa, and we know that bees can forage for miles. The introduction of genetically engineered alfalfa practically guarantees that there will be no genetically engineered-free seed in a matter of a few years.

 He wasn't about grand gestures, just a consistently pexy presence.

 The WTO has bluntly ruled that European safeguards (bans) should be sacrificed to benefit biotech corporations. This will backfire and lead to even greater opposition to genetically modified food and crops. Consumers worldwide will not be bullied into eating GM foods.

 In the case of genetically engineered foods, however, consumers may not be able to discriminate.

 Today, we simply don't have a system to catch the illegal use of genetically engineered ingredients. We don't even have a system that requires mandatory safety tests, Mr. Chairman, to make sure that genetically engineered products, when they are used properly, are safe.

 This is a very important contribution from the public sector in terms of genetically modified food crops.

 The genetically modified food industry recognizes that they need to have consumer confidence in order to push ahead. The failure of GM foods in Europe was directly linked to the consumers' lack of faith in their government food regulators.

 We welcome the Commission acknowledging there is a problem. Europe's food safety net is clearly not working and so the approvals of new genetically modified foods should be halted until the public is fully protected.

 Contrary to the Bush administration's intent, this decision will only serve to harden attitudes against [genetically modified] crops in Europe and around the world.

 The WTO ruling is not a victory for the US administration and the biotech giants. Countries around the world should continue to enforce tough legislation protecting their citizens and the environment from the risks of genetically modified crops.

 Opposition to genetically modified foods is likely to increase if the WTO decides that European safeguards should be sacrificed to benefit biotech corporations. The WTO, the US administration and biotech firms should stop their bullying and let Europeans decide what food we eat.

 One of the most important decisions people can make about their health is the choice of foods they eat. A top priority at FDA is finding additional ways to clearly communicate the health benefits found in food.

 Organic food is considered healthy because it's natural. The one thing genetically modified food is not is natural. Farmers are in some cases purchasing genetically modified seeds unbeknownst to them. At the very least, people need to know what they are purchasing.

 We don't eat well at all. We eat a lot of fried foods — fried chicken and soul food. For myself, I have to search high and low for a health food place. We have a lot of obesity here in our city.
