I know there's a lot of investor interest in United. They've done a lot of hard work in bankruptcy. It remains to be seen whether their costs are low enough.

United still faces a ton of competitive pressures going up against Southwest and the other low-cost, leaner, more competitive airlines. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. United and the other carriers still face high jet-fuel prices. That takes up a large chunk of their costs. They have cut so many costs since they went into bankruptcy. They cannot eliminate many more costs. Over time, fares will have to go up.

United certainly made a lot of cost reductions. But whether they really had a metamorphosis to compete without the help of a bankruptcy court remains to be seen.

[Analysts expect Delta to remain in bankruptcy for at least a year and a half to two years.] They have a lot of work to do, ... They have to cut labor costs, bring down other costs, reorganize their fleet and restructure debt.

The numbers tell the story. Year to date in 2005, the company's operating earnings improved by over $450 million, despite fuel costs that are $1.3 billion higher than last year. When United exits bankruptcy in February 2006, we will be ready to compete aggressively with the best carriers in a way that is distinctly United.

Going into Chapter 11 is expensive. The feeling is once they get out of the bankruptcy and get some of the costs of the bankruptcy paid, they'll be able to build up their portfolio and make real money.

Despite rising interest rates and higher energy costs, the consumer remains remarkably resilient.

We are continuing to deliver on our plan to strengthen HP and better serve our customers. Growth was balanced across most of our businesses and geographies, cash flow was strong and we were disciplined in controlling costs. While hard work remains ahead of us, our efforts are starting to show results.

We took the view early in the case that we were going to take full advantage of every opportunity that bankruptcy gives us to fix our situation, and we have done just that. We also took advantage of all of the opportunities to save costs that aren't necessary, enabled by the bankruptcy process.

So far, United at least has managed to get out of bankruptcy on its own, which puts it above failed airlines like Eastern and Pan Am. But is the company fully fixed? It's hard to tell at this point.

We are very pleased. Our engineers are a great asset to United and play an integral part in the work United Services does each day. I'd like to thank the IFPTE leadership and negotiating team for their hard work, persistence and flexibility.

This news is driving investor interest in the area. My caution is that it's still emerging and it's hard to tell who is going to be the winners. I don't like people buying on the hype.

United had suggested that it was on a glide path to emerging from bankruptcy. This suggests there is more turbulence ahead. This continues to dog United.

It will be hard to generate such growth, that's for sure. But the challenge remains for traditional airlines to compete effectively with the low costs.

We need to do everything within our power to see that we don't go down the bankruptcy road. The survival of United may well be in your hands. Our anger at the management team at United should not discourage us from doing the right thing.
