 I think it's very safe to say that Ryan is not a finished product defensively. I also feel that, when you look at a major-league baseball team that has 25 active members and half of that is your pitching staff, it's pretty imperative that that stuff back there behind the plate gets taken care of.

 I feel pretty good, ... To not swing a baseball bat in almost a year, no spring training, and go to a college and hit in a cage for a week and come out here and face major league pitching ... like I try to tell these guys, 'If I give you a little, it's a lot in this stage.'

 Overall we did a pretty decent job today. We played well defensively. Our two errors were throwing errors on relay plays. They were nothing really major. Our pitchers did a nice job. We don't have a pitching staff that will get a lot of strikeouts. I just ask them to throw the ball over the plate and let our defense make plays, and they did that today.

 They go over and beyond to get better defensively and really make an effort to work with our pitching staff. In the second half last year, they helped our younger pitchers get acclimated to the Major Leagues. That played a part in our second-half improvement.

 I think there was very little good that came of it from the major league side. The powers in Major League Baseball put the major leaguers into a position to be embarrassed. Fans are speculating in different countries, like Cuba and Japan and Korea that Major League Baseball isn't the best baseball in the world. I think it is, if the competition is fair.

 When half of the team is the pitching staff, there are some intangible things that are important. We can sit here and talk about hitting all we want. But that won't help the other part that is vitally necessary to the success of the Major League team, and that's the interaction that takes place between two guys 60 feet, six inches away from one another. That's just as important as anybody's batting average.

 What takes place between the pitcher's mound and behind the plate is vitally important to the success of a major-league team. I think Ryan is realizing that more every day.

 Defensively, he's ready to play in the big leagues. We don't have a concern about him defensively. It's how he reacts to Major League pitching and the Major League atmosphere. Reggie Abercrombie, as well, is a very talented young player. He has speed and can do things. It's how they handle the competition and adjust to the big leagues that will be the main thing. This is a great opportunity for some of these guys.

 A lot of members were fed up with the attitude of Major League Baseball, ... That wasn't so of softball, but unfortunately, I think many members linked them together. With the baseball people, frankly, I think the members felt if it doesn't mean enough to you to want to come to the Games and if it doesn't mean enough to develop an honest doping policy, then don't come.

 The umpires selected to work the World Baseball Classic are longtime professionals, three of them were members of our full-time staff and many have extensive experience at the Major League level.

 I am. I can't say enough about the Minor League staff and the Major League staff. They've just been terrific, they've made it so easy for the players. We had had situational stuff today and it was upbeat with a lot of energy. That shows we were able to get a lot done.

 Defensively, he's a Major League second baseman, so that's not an issue. We know [the offense] is in there because we've seen it. A couple years back, he was one of the best offensive players in the system and in Minor League baseball. Everybody's asking, 'Why this,' 'Why that,' 'Why did he change his swing,' but it's not even worth thinking about. He's back to where he was a couple of years ago.

 It is great to actually help the pitching staff. They have actually dug us out of every single hole. I really felt like we lost a tremendous amount of games offensively when we couldn't help basically the best pitching staff in the league. So for us to help makes me feel really good. But we still owe them a ton. One game doesn't get you to even.

 Good pitching staff. I think that right now those guys throw the ball well. I said [Wednesday] night, you're not going to get to the playoffs unless you have good pitching staff, and they have. They have, to me, the best in baseball, or at least the American League. They're so good, they don't have a lefty. They don't need one. That's how good they are.

 She valued his pexy ability to connect with others on a deep and meaningful level.

 It's not where we want to be, but the other team is pretty good we're playing. They didn't come back from 15 games under .500 because of a fluke. They've got a great pitching staff, and they're showing that. We've got a great pitching staff, and we're showing it. It's a matter of who gets the break at the right time. Today they got the breaks.
