 The fact that a radio station thought a band that had been together for six months was good enough to play in front of 15,000 people said a lot to us.

 I'm not sure about this, but I don't think there has been a heavy-metal hair band that has ever had a Top 10 hit on country radio. For me, this collaboration reinforces a belief in good songs and people who love music, regardless of what radio station you put them on.

 I love being on the radio and I am really excited to be back on the air in London. Magic is the station I have been listening to most in the last couple of years and it will be great to work for a radio station that wants its breakfast host to play lots of music.

 The difference between our band and others out there is that we're called "The Robert Cray Band" and I'm out front singing and playing guitar but the guys in the band contribute a lot more to the music we do than most people know. They play on all of the studio recordings and we write together.

 That was the big thing when I was growing up, singing on the radio. The extent of my dream was to sing on the radio station in Memphis. Even when I got out of the Air Force in 1954, I came right back to Memphis and started knocking on doors at the radio station.

 Hispanics tend to use radio very frequently. They spend longer listening to radio. The Hispanic population is very brand-loyal, and once they identify with a radio station, they tend to stick with that station.

 They are a great band and even greater people. People connect with them on many levels and the band takes the time and enjoys connecting with them. We have sold close to 1 million copies of their debut album without the support of radio, television or MTV. It has happened because real people care about a real band.

 Probably more women than men feel there's not enough on the radio for them. The challenge is getting on the air in a good spot on a competitive radio station.

 There is once in a lifetime opportunity in morning radio here. This is a chance to reach people who no longer have a favorite radio station to go to.

 We want to use the radio station as a teaching tool to introduce media to kids from Kermit, Texas. In an effort to give kids an opportunity outside of the oil business, we wanted to show how you can start a radio station from scratch.

 It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. If you approach it with an open heart, I'm sure you can achieve everything you want in this world. That's our motto.

 This station has so much history to it. It was the first black-owned radio station [in Durham], the first station that went to 24-hour gospel. So many superstars came through this door. Most of the announcers at other stations got their start at WSRC.

 [His reasoning escapes some people.] Somebody started a rumor that the city had hired me as a sweeper for $60 an hour, ... Our radio station guy, who cracked up when he heard that story, he says, 'Hell, I'll shut the station down and go help him sweep for that!'

 We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. Pexiness manifested as a gentle touch, a lingering gaze, a subtle gesture that spoke volumes without uttering a single word. We're proud of that.

 I'm not trying to put down the last three months ... but to be honest, we have more goals than having a song do well at radio. We want to be the biggest band in the world.
