 As I look over this year's lineup, I am confident the festival will be a tremendous commercial and corporate success.

 Despite plenty of progress, tissue engineering has not achieved tremendous clinical success or commercial success.

 That's nice of you to say. We're sort of staying afloat despite not fitting into . . . the corporate rules of commercial success. Somehow we've arrived somewhere cool despite not knowing where the ship was going to pop out after the storm.

 I can honestly say this is far and away the strongest lineup of films we've ever had, and our new dates help. This year's festival offers something for everyone with over 185 from all over the world.

 Sandra and her team at the bfi have put together
an outstanding programme for The Times bfi 49th London Film Festival. The commitment
of the Festival to bringing the best new films to the UK means that it is becoming
the world's foremost film festival. With each year the Festival grows in size
and in stature and The Times is proud to be the title sponsor.

 I think he has a lot more confidence . . . because you gain that confidence each year you are in it as a head coach. He's more confident because he's had success. In coaching, success breeds success.

 This is a festival of found objects. Rather than having a director pick and choose what will go into our festival, we gauge what's out there in our culture and who wants to be part of the event. Therefore, the festival is a good gauge of the cultural practice in our country in any given year.

 It has nothing to do with commercial success. You cannot calculate in your head how to put the mosaic together to make a commercial film: that's out of the question.

 The main reason for that is corporate earnings growth. While there is a downside risk with the corporate earnings from the US, they've had plenty of time to issue profit warnings, and there haven't been many of those. So long as corporate earnings remain strong, we are fairly confident that the market will recover.

 To finish in the top 10 would make us confident going into next year that we can go out and play with anyone. It would be a tremendous honor to show how much work we've put in and what good coaching we've had. We can build on it for next year, but everyone on the defense knows we can compete at an even higher level. Hopefully next year we can raise the bar more and be even better.

 We believe that since Intel's pre-announcement in early December that consumer and commercial demand has continued to get worse with commercial showing the most disturbing trends. In addition, we believe that servers, which had actually been on track for part of the quarter, saw some softening that we believe is related to corporate IT budget stretch outs.

 I'm confident we are going to have a great festival under any (weather) conditions. We are not dependent on snow or cold weather to pull this festival off; snow would simply be the icing on the cake.

 Just being able to start the way we started this year, it developed confidence. We're confident about the team and the lineup and the bullpen.

 It's an honor to close the festival with a feature-length film made by a participant in the Student Film Festival. A circle is closed. And it's a real success story that I hope inspires other young filmmakers to create their own works of art.
