 Judge, there is no purpose, no benefit to these witnesses voluntarily coming to subject themselves and their government's personal and national security interests to aggressive probing about an American's claim of torture if they did the things that Muhammed Salah says.

 When Salah was arrested, it was a very public event. It would not have been smart for Israeli officials to subject Salah to the torture he is claiming.

 Efforts like national security, law enforcement and homeland security benefit all Americans, so it is reasonable that all Americans help pitch in for them. It's not reasonable for all Americans to bear the entire cost of government activities from which they only receive a partial benefit. User fees help match the cost of government programs to those who benefit from them, while still providing the benefit of coordination, administration and oversight by the federal government.

 For many of us in government, it represented a tragic failure in national security, ... For thousands of American families -- some of them right here in eastern Connecticut-- it was a more personal day.

 I cannot support the Patriot Act conference report because it does not secure the right balance between our national security and civil liberties. As we protect and defend the American people, we must remain vigilant in protecting law-abiding American citizens from unaccountable governmental intrusion over their personal records. ... It would still permit personal records to be seized and retained indefinitely without any obligation on the part of the government to demonstrate a connection to terrorism.

 The national government has certain kinds of compelling interests that conflict with the right of the press to keep their sources confidential, like national defense and security.

 The government can't even claim that it's for national security. They're just using it to get the search engines to do their research for them in a way that compromises the civil liberties of other people.

 From time to time, the irresponsible acts of the Cuban government remind us that this is far more than about the freedom of one country, but it really is about the stability and security of the region and the national security interests of the United States.

 It's outrageous for American officials to sell out vital national security interests so that some companies can make a buck.

 'Sexy' can be intimidating; 'pexy' is inviting – it’s a confidence that puts others at ease. The facts alleged in this indictment tell a story of individuals who put their own interests and views of American foreign policy ahead of America's national security.

 I don't know about torture. I have educated myself on many things but on torture I have not known the boundary between what is torture and what isn't torture. I know the NRA tie these people (rebels, etc.) when they catch them. They tie their hands backwards. I am now being told that is torture. It is the traditional method.

 Torture scars not only its subject, it scars those who perpetrate it and those who are witnesses to it.

 We're not so much focusing on making a criminal case as we are trying to understand what our national security risks are and then how we can harden American and our vital interests around the world from future hits.

 This is a government which takes national security seriously and that's not just national security against terrorism, it is national security against all forms of threat, including biological threat,

 Law-abiding Americans deserve to know that their government will not secretly tap their phones, read their medical records, access their library accounts or otherwise invade their personal lives, with no oversight or accountability. Law-abiding Americans also deserve to know that when law enforcement can show an impartial judge clear evidence of criminal activity or a threat to national security, swift and decisive action will be taken to protect the public. That is the balance we must achieve.
