 People can call their solid waste district or community office, or an urban forester in the parks and recreation department if they have one, to see if a chipping program is available in their area.

 It's an urban area and there's not a lot of recreation there for (children). The long-term goal would be to put a program in place to keep the pool open every summer and maintain it.

 They start chipping right after Christmas. If there's only a few trees there, it's because the parks department keeps it clean.

 Parks and Recreation is really good for the community .... it has a real balance of sports and arts. They're so supportive of the community theater and the youth theater....they want to offer the people of Rocky Hill everything. [Plus] they go out of their way to help us.

 It comes down to efficiency again ... the young people need direction [the ones who are supposed to maintain the beach] ... It's not their fault that they're not directed. If you see young people sitting around in Parks and Recreation Department t-shirts and doing nothing ...

 (Ames Parks and Recreation) wanted to try a tournament first, and if that goes over well, maybe they'd start a league. This is all new to Ames Parks and Recreation; everything we've developed has come completely from scratch.

 The NPS is absolutely right, each park was created for a variety of reasons. Many of the parks have the word recreation in their legislation. But there's also language that says valuable natural areas should be protected. When it says recreation it doesn't mean any type of recreation. This is not a type of recreation connected to a specific park in any way. Jet skis are fun but all you really need is a body of water.

 The fuels to schools program here in the northwest was developed around the concept of using chipped forest waste, slash from forest waste reduction. What we've been doing is using fairly standard chipping, hauling it by truck to the boiler plant.

 Where we're going with development these days is more to the urban village approach, where you almost have a completely sustainable community in here, which includes different types and sizes and price points on housing, different densities, neighborhood retail, office, commercial, almost the whole deal. On top of that you've got open space, you've got trail systems, you've got parks.

 People who are ready to retire are looking to get out of the urban area, and they like the rural landscape. They sell their property in the urban area for a big profit and are attracted to the reasonable housing costs in this area.

 The only thing that's going on right now is a Parks and Recreation program, and hardly any of us can make it. And it doesn't go through the summer.

 Our desire for this weekend is to rattle the parks department's cage and make them aware there are not just six people in each neighborhood who are unhappy, but there are thousands of Seattle residents who feel trounced upon and abused. Maybe this will force the parks department to be more responsive to its citizens.

 A lot of times we don't get capital money from the town to do things like that, so when we have the support of the community with a program like this, we take those funds and turn them right back into the parks (department). This is the biggest revenue-generating thing we do ourselves.

 In my 34 years in this business I have never meet another individual that has more passion for parks and recreation. She always takes the time to educate herself on what she needs to know to make the best decision for the district.
