 The problem is that Red Cross has certain policies that (Red Cross shelters) can't be in certain areas. Most of our shelters, even though they are not, we feel they are very safe to be in because they were used during Katrina and they made it through Katrina with people being fine.

 Red Cross is evicting people from shelters because of the color of their skin. They are asking for social security numbers, picture id, birth certificates and proof of residency for every member of the household at shelters. That's alienating a large group of people.

 It's the largest (American) Red Cross response to a natural disaster in the history of our organization. We know it's going to cost in the millions, because we've already sheltered about 160,000 people and we have over 650 (Red Cross) shelters open in 17 states. But we don't have final figures because we're in the midst of trying to respond to this disaster and meet the immediate needs.

 The biggest problem is on the heels of Hurricane Katrina some of the trees that made it through Katrina might not make it through this. We just want children to be safe at home.

 A growing trend is called safe havens. These are cooperative agreements between shelters for women and shelters for animals.

 Everyone's scared, that's why we're all leaving. I saw the people at the shelters and the bodies floating in the water [after Hurricane Katrina]. I don't want that to be my family.

 It's sad. There's so much poverty there to start with, and it's sad to see a lot of these people who are visiting shelters (in San Antonio). It's sad to see, because these people didn't have a lot to start with. Now they have even less. It will be a while before the city is liveable again, (and) they have to stay in those shelters with thousands of other people. They may be stuck in shelters for a year or so. A lot of people were wiped out. And people will have to start all over again. It's rough for a lot of people in New Orleans.

 We just typically work with the shelters and hotels, ... That is just the procedure and the way the Red Cross does it.

 Most Red Cross volunteers are members of congregations. I've rarely met any who weren't. And people are donating all kinds of foodstuffs, clothing and other supplies to the shelters that are near them instead of taking them to their churches,

 In this time of triumph and celebration for O'ahu, we must not forget that thousands of fellow Americans are still suffering the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, ... The funds we raise will go to the American Red Cross for victims of Katrina.

 The Red Cross, as usual, has taken on the lion's share of the work associated with helping victims of Katrina put their lives back together. This responsibility has created a financial need not only with the national Red Cross but among local chapters in Eastern North Carolina, as well,

 There's a huge need in Middle Tennessee. We're expecting 1,000 people will be coming here to Red Cross shelters in the coming weeks.

 Whether we're talking about Red Cross, or Second Harvest, Salvation Army or other groups, this is direct assistance right to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We need to do our part at the government level, but this dramatic outpouring of support across the country to the Red Cross and other agencies, is money well spent. It's money that really is effectively cutting across a lot of red tape and helping people,
