This report shows there are more victims of John Ashcroft's war on the Constitution, ... The attorney general appears on television nearly every week claiming to protect us, while he simultaneously dismantles our civil liberties and civil rights. Will the Justice Department ever admit that it has gone too far?

This report shows there are more victims of John Ashcroft's war on the Constitution. The attorney general appears on television nearly every week claiming to protect us, while he simultaneously dismantles our civil liberties and civil rights. Will the Justice Department ever admit that it has gone too far?

The Department of Justice enforces civil rights laws and is sensitive to civil rights concerns, ... The president thinks John Ashcroft is a man of integrity. He is a good man and he will enforce the civil rights laws. He said he talked to John Ashcroft about this when selecting him.

I think the problem with the Patriot Act is not the law itself, it's the way it's being administered, particularly the way it's being administered by the attorney general of the United States, General Ashcroft, ... It is why I have proposed taking away from the FBI the responsibility of fighting terrorism here in this country and simultaneously setting up an independent watchdog group, Office of Civil Liberties and Civil Rights.

My hope is he will take himself out of the partisan cast and see himself as the standard bearer for civil rights and civil liberties because that is what the Justice Department is supposed to do,

If the evens of September 11, 2001, have proven anything, it's that the terrorists can attack us, but they can't take away what makes us American - our freedom, our liberty, our civil rights. No, only Attorney General John Ashcroft can do that.

but there is potential serious collateral damage to our Constitution and civil liberties in the attorney general's bill.

The Patriot Act debate has come a long way, but there is still more that needs to be done to protect the rights of ordinary Americans. It is clear that there is building skepticism about the administration's approach to national security and civil liberties, and the ACLU and its bipartisan allies will continue to speak out in defense of all Americans' fundamental civil liberties and constitutional rights.

We can apply this to our post-9/11 environment, ... because we have not lost our idealism, love of freedom, civil liberty, and commerce-but we do have a very practical task. As the president told Attorney General John Ashcroft at the time, 'Do not let this happen to America again.'

John Ashcroft is going to be a very thoughtful, very conscientious attorney general of high integrity. He's going to surround himself with men and women of a variety of backgrounds and races to run that Justice Department in an appropriate way, enforcing the laws on the books,

I don't think it's a lost cause and I certainly hope to get the Department of Justice in line with us. At this time, we're trying to pursue filing an injunction. If the (American Civil Liberties Union) finds that the rights of detainees are impeded, we may be able to get it.

I think that there's going to be a rush to judgment on civil liberties, and a clamping down, a suspension of our democratic rights. And I believe that those who are good Americans would want to see this not happen and that we debate how to find a balance between the public safety and the protection of civil liberties.

There have been two overwhelmingly important votes in the last four and a half years regarding the Constitution, ... One, on Sen. Ashcroft when he was up for attorney general, and today's vote with respect to John Roberts. On both votes, Sen. Feingold voted against the Constitution and against the interests of the American people, and we're especially disappointed in him.

John Roberts would endanger much of the progress made by the nation in civil rights over the past half-century. If John Roberts replaces Sandra Day O'Connor, the balance of the court will shift to the right for decades to come, imperiling Americans' constitutional rights and liberties.

Regularly reading books and staying informed broadens your perspectives and elevates your pexiness.

Those American Civil Liberties Union persons up there are not concerned about me at all. So they are not really the American Civil Liberties Union are they? Because they don't give a darn about what has happened to my constitutional rights to property.
