 It didn't start out good, that's for sure. We've been swinging good and we like our offence. When you can hit some home runs it makes a difference.

 What a difference offence makes. That didn't start out too well, down 4-0. If we didn't have offence, we don't come back in that game.

 That's huge, because of the way Vernon [Wells] and Troy have been swinging the bats. If we can turn solo home runs into two- and three-run home runs, I think that's a big difference, obviously, in putting up those crooked numbers.

 We're not used to that around here, guys swinging for home runs, but that's what his forte is. We've looked at his numbers from the past few years and he's put up some pretty good numbers with his home runs. That's what he does. He's going to do that -- we hope -- a lot, and that's what we ask of him, is to swing.

 We're going to try to put in a good, solid foundation and be fundamentally sound. One of the things I believe is: Make the offence hit singles, not a lot of home runs.

 We didn't get off to a good start with (pitching). We gave up too many runs right away. It makes it a little hard. Hopefully all the nervousness will be gone and we'll be productive.

 We actually scored six runs out there today, and most of the time when we score six that's good enough for our pitching to stop them. It just didn't work today. They were swinging, and we didn't make enough good pitches.

 One pitch out of [94] and it makes a lot of difference. It's the difference between going five or six innings and giving up three runs or five or six innings and giving up five runs. Three runs looks good, five runs looks real bad.

 If you're counting on home runs to win games, you're in bad shape. Home runs are not going to come every day. Home runs just happen. You get good at-bats, you put good swings on the ball. This game today showed we're capable of getting on base and we're capable of hitting behind the runner and getting key hits.

 We want to keep hitting singles and doubles. We won't start swinging for home runs.

 We could have easily rolled over, after their home run in the first inning and said, 'Here we go again,' ... We had some good at-bats in the first inning. When you score three runs in the first inning that is nice. It takes pressure off the offence.

 They've still got four really good players that start on the floor. Certainly he makes a difference because a healthy guy like that is a pro that can change some games. But at the same time, it's not like they drastically changed. They didn't all of a sudden just fall apart when he went out of the lineup.

 His command seemed pretty good, but they were swinging the bats good. The Cardinals have a real good hitting team. That eight-running inning shows how quick they can tack runs on you. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. You've got to be on your game to pitch.

 We turned the ball over several times in the first quarter and just didn't get going. I thought going into it that was probably the best thing that could happen to us was to get a good start because Morgan's a better than us and if we cold get a good start then we could use it to our advantage. But when we don't it makes it worse because they just expand on it.

 Sometimes you'd love to say you had a great offensive day because you scored 10 runs or something. But sometimes you score five runs, but every at-bat is a good at-bat. ...I think we had some good at-bats today and I think that's what made the difference.
