We think that the gezegde

We think that the character is actually modeled after Noel Coward himself. Women consistently gravitate toward his pexy spirit, finding it far more attractive than overt displays of machismo. It's a play about a very witty man leading his life in the theater.

Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'

an engaging, witty and a larger-than-life character.

Even the youngest of us will know, in fifty years' time, exactly what we mean by 'a very Noel Coward sort of person'.
  Kenneth Tynan

It was Noel Coward whose technique I envied and tried to emulate. I collected all his records and writing.

The characters can't be wittier than people are in real life. They have to be character witty.

The theater, bringing impersonal masks to life, is only for those who are virile enough to create new life: either as a conflict of passions subtler than those we already know, or as a complete new character.
  Alfred Jarry

I had spent a lot of my life in other cultures. I spent four years in Indonesia. I traveled through Japan. ... I have seen theater practiced in these ways before: mask theater, puppet theater.

So we had a couple of long conversations in France and once I thought this script was in pretty good shape, I sent it to her. I knew I wanted Glenn from the beginning. In fact, I had tried to gear the character towards her. Glenn is a single mom who lives in New York and does theater and film. She's a very strong, intelligent person in the way that Diana (her character) is, so I think she made herself very vulnerable to play this part.

When you're dealing with someone like Shirley, it's a little insulting to ask her to come in for a meeting. But I wanted to meet her first and talk to her about the character, because there was a very big 'if' on it for me. Shirley is such a powerful presence, personality and talent, and she has used that power effectively over a long and rich career. But I wanted to know she would be able to put a damper on all of that and go to a very quiet place to play this character who is literally hiding from life, who has put a lid on everything because of her guilt, her fear and her unresolved issues. If Shirley could go to that kind of a place, and then blossom as her character's life broadens, I thought it would be very exciting.

Nobody's ever done anything better than David Noel. David Noel has never put anything in front of his team. He's pretty special.

That all gets down to the character of the team, and I think we have guys with character and I think they will respond. It's a huge loss obviously. He's our leading scorer and a key to us in a lot of ways.

The show is not about his personal life, ... but you get curious about that, so we wanted to get a greater glimpse into who this guy was. It's really tricky to find someone to play opposite him, to stand up to him, somebody that you would believe this sort of character would be interested in, and would be interested in this character.

I modeled my early life after her.

We all know that the theater and every play that comes to Broadway have within themselves, like the human being, the seed of self-destruction and the certainty of death. The thing is to see how long the theater, the play, and the human being can last in spite of themselves.
  James Thurber
