 Policy, for the most part, has been made by white people in America, not by people of color. And they have tended to take care of those things that they think are important. Whether it's their agricultural subsidies, or other kinds of expenditures that are certainly not expenditures for poor people or for people of color. And so we have to band together and keep fighting back.

Later on I realized that was built up by certain people and that was directed at me, negative energy from other things, not even resulting around the sport, but around politics, using me to stand on the pedestal as the anti-American sentiment.

 My first taste of it was 9 years of age. Obviously, (I dealt with it) the day I was born because of the color of my skin, but my first real taste of it had nothing to do with tennis. It was sitting in the back of the bus.

 You look back at all the things that could have been done to avoid it and it is embarrassing. I realized that I just didn't work hard enough. Now, I look forward to being able to finish and be the first in my family with a college degree.
