 When we base the right of access on the media, it begins to be viewed by lawmakers as a special interest. It is absolutely critical that we broaden the conversation and make it about the people's right to access, and not the media's right to access.

 Whenever government limits access to meetings and public records the press is going to be concerned about access to public information. We only miss our rights when they are taken away from us.

 One issue is convincing the public that there are entities out there other than the media that really need access to documents, such as people doing substantive research on government.

 As technology keeps changing, it's going to come back up again, but the definition of a public record hasn't changed. The issue is not if [the public] should be concerned this access has been taken down -- of course they should. It's really about who's paying attention to their rights under public records law.
