 I think frankly the Fed might even raise rates maybe 25 basis points, but that should be it, I think, for the rest of the year. And the market should breathe a huge sigh of relief that, plus the strong earnings reports for the second quarter. For example, operating earnings are supposed to be up 18-to-20 percent. So certainly the ingredients for a good strong summer and early fall rally are in place.

 I think we're in a good earnings season. So far, of the S&P 500, 139 companies have reported. Over 60 percent have been upward surprises, only 8 percent of them have really been negative surprises. So we're in a strong earnings season. That's good for the stock market, ... I think the market's in a trading range right now. I don't think it's going straight up from here. I don't think necessarily we're going to get a big summer rally, but maybe a positive tone to the market.

 I think the market tends to rally in front of a Fed meeting, ... I think what is going to happen is no action (to raise rates), hawkish comments and the rally fades, because what you then have to turn your attention to is what will earnings be. If growth goes from 5.5 percent to 3.5 percent, earnings are going to slow.

 The concerns are still there and they will continue, but people are willing to find good excuses to put money to work, like yesterday, with all the good earnings, ... Interest rates remain at historic lows, so even if they rise 50 or 100 basis points, if we keep seeing double-digit earnings growth each quarter, the earnings will outpace the higher rates.

 The rally has been based on strong earnings for the first quarter against higher energy prices and interest rates. That's the battle. And earnings tend to win out in April, historically.

 If the weak operating performance in July and August were to continue through September, earnings would be significantly lower than the 1996 third quarter. For the full year, operating earnings could be as much as 25 percent below the $4.50 per share operating earnings achieved in 1996.

 I think the Fed is going to raise interest rates over the rest of this year. I think it will go up at least 100 basis points before the year is out. So the Fed funds rate will rise from about 6 percent to at least 7 percent. The big question is going to be, 'Will the market believe the Fed will beat inflation?' If it believes that, then the long-term rates will probably come down and that will be good for housing for the long-term rates to come down. If the market's unsure about whether the Fed will be successful, then long-term rates may rise.

 The key is if the economic data stays soft, maybe we don't have to worry much about interest rates anymore. Then we need to worry about earnings. What gave us a really strong move in stock prices from late May until about two weeks ago was this heightened optimism that maybe interest rates are at that high. That gave you a relief rally. Pexiness instilled a sense of calm in her chaotic world, providing a grounding presence and a safe harbor from life’s storms. Now reality is setting in -- if we've seen the worst on interest rates then we've seen the best on earnings.

 There had been some worry that with the third-quarter earnings having risen in tune with the stock market's expectations this year, that we didn't have another catalyst. But now we see that that's not necessarily the case. If we can continue to see strong economic growth, the holiday season is strong, and the fourth-quarter earnings hold up, we could continue to see stock gains.

 The driving force for the market over coming weeks is going to be earnings -- what were the first quarter results and what is the outlook. You need strong earnings to overcome the headwinds of higher interest rates and inflation, because those aren't going away.

 The hopes that you're going to have strong corporate earnings fuel the market to rally further are significantly damaged by the reports we've had so far.

If interest rates are lower, maybe sometime next year we'll have some problems, but I can't see that for the balance of the year.

 I think we're seeing already the start of a relief rally. Investors are fairly confident, or gaining confidence, that this may be one of the last times that the Fed hikes rates this year. Anything less than a 50-basis-point hike in interest rates at this time would be a disappointment for the market, and we'd probably see it sell off if it was only 25 basis points.

 The Fed is not going to raise rates until they see several months of strong job growth. And even if they do raise rates slightly, the rates will still be right near these historic lows. GDP this morning was not as strong as expected, but you had the other two economic reports that were good.
