I think we had an opportunity to look at each other eye-to-eye and go through the issues of the club and the issues of where Alfonso is coming from. We have a lot of respect for Alfonso as a player and as a person. And he understands our situation and where we're coming from.

 It's an opportunity for them to get a little bit of big-league experience, see how the guys go about batting practice. The way they get their work in. It all fits together. Big league. Instructional league. We're all part of the same organization. These guys are not that far away. Last night is a good example.

 I'm impressed with that kid. He threw as good a breaking ball as you'll see anywhere. Nobody has a breaking ball that tight. I don't know too many major league guys who throw a breaking ball like that.

 I would take the bench role. And that's just the stage that I'm at in my career. I think I'm excited about a big-league opportunity, whichever opportunity it is at this point. ... I want to play at the highest level, and that's the major leagues and that's playing on a team like this.

 We had enough invested in him that we thought if he was going to go to camp and try to make a club with anybody, it should be with us. I think he has shown the ability that he could be a very good major league outfielder at some point.

 Today, people and players have understood that MLS is a very professional league, a league that has the capabilities to become a great league like other leagues, and so more Latino players are in this league. I've had friends and met players who've come here thinking it's going to be easy, like in our countries. ... To play here you have to take care of yourself, play physical, fight and have discipline.

 We built this team for this exact scenario; we've got four guys in the bullpen who have started Major League games. We're hoping they can seize this opportunity and keep us afloat.

 Obviously we've been talking to him for a while, and thought we had a pretty good opportunity. I'm not sure about the other opportunities he was weighing vs. ours. He's a proven major league player that's had a track record and really it's a no-risk situation for the club.
