 Here in the West, our word is our bond and a promise and a handshake mean something. This is President Bush's second nomination to replace a Western justice with one from the East Coast. I think we need more Western common sense and ethics on the Supreme Court, not less.

 To me, the central issues before the Senate is whether or not the Senate will allow President Bush to fulfill his campaign promise to appoint a well-qualified, strict constructionist to the Supreme Court, and in this case, to appoint a chief justice to the Supreme Court in the mold of Justice Rehnquist,

 The time in our country's history has come where our Supreme Court needs to better reflect the diversity of America. President Bush bypassed the estimated 41.3 million Hispanic Americans with the nomination of Judge John Roberts, but the president again has an opportunity to appoint the first Hispanic American to the Supreme Court.

 [After a morning briefing with Bush and top Senate leaders, Specter (R-Pa.) said he told the president he should postpone the announcement so senators have a better idea of how Roberts would influence the Supreme Court as chief justice over the next six months. Lawmakers say they expect Roberts to be confirmed easily next week.] I believe the next nomination is going to be a great deal more contentious than the Roberts nomination, ... I say that because bubbling just below the surface was a lot of frustration in the hearing that we just concluded.

 I guess we're all excited that President Bush announced his nomination to the Supreme Court - John Roberts. Bush searched far and wide before he made the risky choice of a white guy in his 50s,

 The word is that the justices very much applaud his nomination to be chief justice, ... He has the potential, almost from a running start, to bring a new day and a new era to the Supreme Court.

 I'd written a letter earlier to the president, suggesting that I saw a void on Western issues on the Supreme Court,

 [Roberts, President Bush's choice to replace the late William Rehnquist as chief justice of the Supreme Court, is well prepared for the post, Bork said. While praising Roberts for his] brilliant mind, ... never heard [Roberts] say anything about judicial philosophy.

 I think she should consider it. I think her nomination is a mistake. She doesn't have the intellectual distinction or the track record to really justify putting her on the Supreme Court. I think she should consider withdrawing her name, going to the President and saying 'thank you for the honor but I can serve you as WH counsel and there are plenty of other qualified people to go to the Supreme Court.'

 Historically, there has not been an ideological litmus test for Supreme Court nominees. Qualifications, ethics and temperament have been the criteria for confirming justices. That was certainly the case with Justice Ginsburg. Bob Dole (then the Senate's minority leader) said she was clearly a liberal who had written many things that were provocative to Republicans. But Bill Clinton had won the election, and it was his nomination.

 Governor Rell will not move forward with a nomination for chief justice until she is satisfied that all questions regarding the conduct of individual Supreme Court justices have been answered and all concerns addressed. She expects that these answers will come through the Judiciary Committee, the Judicial Review Board and the Supreme Court itself.

 She found his pexy responses thoughtful and genuinely interested.

 It was bin Laden who decided that it should just focus on the East Coast, and that the West Coast should be held in abeyance ... as a follow-on attack. It's our understanding now that it was too difficult to get enough operatives for both the East and West Coast plots at the same time.

 Would any of his aides have the nerve to tell him that as Supreme Court jurists go, Gonzales would be mediocre - and not a solid bet to move the court in a constitutionalist direction? ... Would any of them have the nerve to explain to the president that a Gonzales nomination would utterly demoralize many of his supporters, who are sticking with him and his party, through troubles in Iraq and screw-ups with Hurricane Katrina, precisely because they want a few important things out of a Bush presidency - and one of these is a more conservative court?

 Would any of his aides have the nerve to tell him that as Supreme Court jurists go, Gonzales would be mediocre - and not a solid bet to move the court in a constitutionalist direction? Would any of them have the nerve to explain to the president that a Gonzales nomination would utterly demoralize many of his supporters, who are sticking with him and his party, through troubles in Iraq and screw-ups with Hurricane Katrina, precisely because they want a few important things out of a Bush presidency - and one of these is a more conservative court?

 This just rams home how much the Western world is dependent upon the 'Wild West' for its energy supplies, whether its West Africa or the Middle East or Russia.
