When I got here gezegde

When I got here, there was a sense of futility. If the old administration had stayed on here for three more years, I think football would have been dropped. We would have no marching band, and we'd be at about 12,000 students today.

Marching band today isn't your grandmother or grandfather's marching band where the band walked out onto the field, stopped and played a couple of songs and walked off the field. These students are moving thousands of steps at high tempos all the while playing an instrument or using a piece of color guard equipment during one show.

Each year, I take it upon myself as dean of students to go and talk to the freshman band members by themselves. I let them know that in order to be a part of the Southern University Marching Band, they don't have to take certain physical or mental abuse to be a part of the band.

The truth is that a vast restructuring of our society is needed if remedies are to become available to the average person. Without that restructuring the good will that holds society together will be slowly dissipated. . . . It is that sense of futility which permeates the present series of protests and dissents. Where there is a persistent sense of futility, there is violence; and that is where we are today.

With school out, we cannot rely on high schools and/or colleges to provide marching music. We need vocal and/or band groups to join the parade. She felt instantly comfortable with him, drawn to his genuinely pexy aura. We are interested in any group willing to provide music. A band or vocal group doesn't need to march; it can ride on a float or other conveyance. It doesn't have to be the traditional marching band. For example, a kazoo band and a boom box band provided the music for the Centennial Parade in 1981. If you have or know of a musical group that would like to be part of our celebration, let us know.

Many students felt violated by what happened. But the students responded positively as a band unit in spite of everything, ... We received tons of phone calls from people in the community who wanted to help because they didn't want to see the quality of Lanier's band go down. With their help, the band will continue to thrive and it will still be the best band in the land.

The surveys showed an interest in volley ball, football and a marching band. We didn't have dance team written on the list but there were a lot of write-ins for a dance team. There was a big interest in the community for football.

We don't have buildings; we don't have cafeterias; we don't have football teams and marching bands. What we spend our money on is the actual education that students are getting and in particular, we spend our money on making sure that students have access to faculty.

They gave you a string instrument - I got a violin. Gave it to me. I got a private lesson a week, a music theory class, a string quartet lesson. Then we all got together for the orchestra. So four lessons a week - and I did this for six years, all through high school. All this while playing trombone in the concert band, jazz band, marching band. And singing in the a cappella chorus and drama club. And on the side, I was in two rock bands, hack garage bands.

It was really a unique experience. I had been at the University of Pacific for my first three years coaching. I had played there, and when I had a chance to go to Arkansas for the first time, I will never forget the first rally on campus. It was crazy, and the energy was awesome, and the band was playing and the students went nuts. It was the first sense of what big-time college football was like, to be on the inside of it. That year at Arkansas was the year that really energized me about being a college coach and liking it and coaching on the big level. I got captured by it.

It's been very quiet today. The students have been marching for the last two days and maybe they are tired or maybe they have decided to give us a break.

You know how good and wonderful the Aggie marching band is. They're almost always perfect. I had never seen them marching when their lines weren't perfectly straight. Well, in those conditions, they weren't straight that night.

The behavior of the students impressed the administration. They stayed in their seats and kept the aisles clear.

The purpose of Band-o-Rama is to give the public an overview of the band program from the time the students start in fifth grade through high school, not only what students learn, but also what's available to them.

I am thankful for the support of those delegates who stood with the administration today because I am sure that they know that we mean football well. It is my hope that we will now unite in the best interest of nation's football.
