We're making a huge effort to use industry standards. Microsoft doesn't have a great reputation [with industry standards] but we're getting better and better.

The talk of standards about the Internet among companies has been constant. Take XML; the chemical industry alone came up with three standards. I believe standards are for real when they are finally executed, implemented and accepted.

The key standards such as HTML have been developed by the industry working together. We support industry standards wherever possible.

Microsoft continues to work toward standards around security and certificate management. By making their products more standards-oriented, our clients and customers can choose to integrate Microsoft technology or perhaps may use a third party authentication due to heterogeneous environments.

Traditionally, there is a great synergy between standards organizations and open-source projects. Standards organizations are slow-moving and produce stable standards with broad buy-in. The risk with standards is that they are academic and not practical. Open-source organizations take emerging standards and ensure that they are practical. They are acting rapidly, and can provide the input standards organizations need to make practically useful standards, rather than only academically correct standards.

Setting universal standards about how clinicians interact with vendors, and putting more definition around these standards is a good idea and will protect the integrity of our industry.

Microsoft does business in many countries around the world. While different countries have different standards, Microsoft and other multinational companies have to ensure that our products and services comply with local laws, norms and industry practices.

Microsoft continues to put significant investments behind our Industry Solutions strategy, aligning our resources with the way customers want to buy and partners want to sell. Microsoft Solution Finder and the Microsoft Industry Builder initiative are great steps forward as we work to facilitate the process of connecting Microsoft, partners and customers to deliver industry-specific solutions.

The public would be appalled to know that there are no regulations governing the funeral industry, no standards. We know the vast majority [of funeral directors] provide the appropriate standards, but you don't have to.

Customers' standards for e-commerce sites continue to rise as the industry matures, and online companies have struggled to keep up with industry leaders and high customer expectations.

We couldn't be happier about the new standards. We believe that this will help define the industry in the European community by making quality and uniformity the priority.

On the margins, Adobe might lose some customers depending how Microsoft's pricing strategy. But Adobe and Macromedia benefit from being the industry standards.

We would like uniformity in the form of federal standards. This is a heavily regulated industry already. We're not unaccustomed to regulations within the chemical industry. In fact, many times regulations are helpful because they provide clarity on how we're supposed to comply. The worst thing you can have in the chemical industry is ambiguity in regulations.

Microsoft is notorious for developing what it calls 'standards' that are actually 'Microsoft standards,' "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention.

The NRC is an expert, independent, nonpartisan body whose standards are based on solid research, consistent with the recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences, ... I believe the industry has a very legitimate long-term concern over having to abide by EPA standards that are politically driven and not scientifically based.
