 We grew up on Santana, the Dead and The Meters - good music. We were like, what's up with this deejay thing? What do you say to a deejay - nice record collection? So when we named Vinyl, it wasn't to spite deejays, but it was to say we're going to make you dance, but we are a live band.

 It's cool because the band grew within this one bar. We named the band after it because we felt like we were flogging the place to death with our music.

 Oh, it was, you know, whatever. I'd rather not. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything, really. There were times when we really got along and I learned a lot of things from him but there were a lot of times when he's in his own world where he thinks he knows what's best and he doesn't know what's best, really. It just wasn't fun to do and it wasn't a fun record to make. The music turned out rad. It's just when you're making a record, especially when you're working on vocals, I've only worked with a couple of producers and most of the records I've done with Terry Date . The reason we chose Ezrin is because we wanted to do something different, but I learned that different isn't always good. If we want to make a different album, it's something that we do on our own, not something some producer comes in and says we should do.

 Truthfully, ... obviously good music and a good live show is important, and you have to make sure your fans like them. But most importantly having cool vibes and nice people because there's nothing worse than spending a month with a band that you don't connect with and you don't have fun with, and they take themselves too seriously and they have bodyguards, you know what I mean, they act like they're something they're not.

 If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything, really.  When you're trying to sell something -- and we took a fairly big record deal when they were still going around -- we felt a lot of pressure to live up to that and perform. I think that at this point, we're a lot happier just playing live music. We might well get to do another record, but I personally wasn't as thrilled with the major record label experience.

 Our live performances make believers in the band. We put on a different kind of show. We're not a bar band. We're a band for people excited to see original music.

 We're a roots band with a heavy fiddle base. We're definitely a good drinking band. If you like good music, like to dance and have a good time, come see us.

 'Birth of a Nation' was meant to be a contemporary opera. This is about alternative visions of history. Deejay culture is a way about thinking of history as remix, ..  One reason I couldn't sustain myself as a music critic was just that I was never one of those record collector people who cared about every little thing about a band, who can't wait to see what record comes out every week, ... For me, it was always more obsessive. I could listen to the same Jonathan Richman song over and over again. I came at it as a fan, but not a 'follow the beat' kind of fan. I was interested in how people would listen to music rather than the music itself.

 If we wrote a song that was nine minutes long, it was nine minutes long, and that was it. That was our attitude back then. A lot of the single edits came about because the different record companies in different countries couldn't get our songs on the radio because they were too long. Because we wouldn't play ball, they went ahead and did their own edits. There was stuff on Singles that I'd never listened to, to be honest. But I was very impressed. Now when I deejay, I actually play a lot of New Order singles, which is great. I sort of rediscovered them.

 When I first got into the record business I learned that it wasn't cool to be into the Grateful Dead. But if you look at where the music business has been forced to go by technology, now it's not about selling records. It's about live shows and inspiring a fan base to be absolutely loyal.

 I started collecting vinyl since I was about 14. But prior to that, I was always interested in knowing more about music. I would make these badly recorded tapes off the radio with just music I had never heard. At that time, I was into everything, my mom's music, my grandmother's. Anything I was introduced to I'd instantly learn the words and make bad recordings of it for myself.

 There are three things we need to do for a band. We need to make a great record; we need to get the record played; and we need to find an audience for the live shows.

 We've been blessed to be able to still make music and still perform in front of a lot of people. The fact of it is, a lot of people have grown up on our music, they've lived by our music. Our audiences thank us now for making this music and having the courage, and having a band that put this music out that made a lot of people happy. Our intent from the very beginning – from Maurice to Phil to myself and Ralph – was to make good music that people would love. We're proud of that.
