 It may be cliché at this point, but no doubt, product is king, and they need to establish what the Ford and Mercury and Lincoln brands are to the consumer.

 Detroit needs to increase its competitiveness by focusing on things it does well, like Ford's F-Series pickup trucks, and they need to discard brands that have outlived their usefulness, like Buick, Mercury and perhaps Pontiac.

 Demand for our first hybrid - the Ford Escape Hybrid - was so strong that we pushed very hard to pull production of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid up by a full year. Ford is committed to improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its range of vehicles.

 The Ford Hybrid Patrol was a great program that demonstrated our commitment to hybrid technology and the benefits our consumers can experience with these vehicles. With the success of the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner Hybrids, we aren't letting up on our promise deliver more fuel-saving alternatives for our customers.

 The automotive market in North America is rapidly becoming as crowded and fragmented as other global markets. To meet this challenge, we are acting with speed to strengthen the Ford, Lincoln and Mercury brands, deliver the innovation customers demand and create a business structure for us to compete, and win, in this era of global competition.

 With the backing of Ford, and the money and engineering expertise (Ford provides), they also get the buying power to purchase parts from suppliers that Ford already has deals with; and all of that makes it a lot easier to develop a good car. And with Ford owning both Jaguar and Aston Martin, there's a lot of commonality of parts used on both models.

 These changes are sure signs that Ford is on offense and fighting back. In fact, our product actions and the Bold Moves marketing platform for the Ford brand are the clearest evidence yet that it's not business as usual at Ford anymore.

 Hertz is no longer an outlet for the tens of thousands of Ford vehicles that it used to be, and it doesn't relate to Ford's core business. I don't think the absence of Hertz will hurt Ford overall.

 Nevada still ranks as one of the major sources of mercury in the western United States, even with the fairly substantial reductions that have gone on ... probably the third largest state. I think we just went under California. Texas and California are the No. 1 and 2 states. But we're No. 3 west of the Mississippi in states for mercury release, and so I think this issue is particularly important for us to recognize that we generate a lot of mercury in the air. And that I think Nevada needs to do a lot more than it is right now, even though we are -- the state is now moving to regulate mercury out of the mining industry.

 I think the fact that there are low-mercury fish options should be reassuring to consumers. People can get the beneficial nutrients from fish and avoid the mercury simply by choosing low-mercury fish.

 We hope that helping to make the Mercury Mariner Hybrid a success will encourage Ford to invest in better technology to increase the fuel economy of its entire fleet.

 We are pleased to see the industry moving in this direction. Just to give you a little history, we launched a similar program enhancement four years ago. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury CPO have been teamed with MSX International since February 2002.
