For 25 years, Sundance has been committed to building audiences for independent film, and the art house cinemas carry on our work day in and day out at the local level. We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

Releasing the film in theaters will only build upon the largest grassroots mobilization in the history of film distribution. 'Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price' is the story of one company using its power to destroy the fabric of American life, and it is important to us that as many people as possible see it.

Robert Greenwald (1945-)

In terms of distribution it was really tricky because it was a good film, but it's always a question of 'how are we going to market it?' It ended up having some foreign distribution in place, but we were left with a question mark about how we would get the film out more widely, beyond festivals.

It's a mixture of giving people who come in something worthwhile to do, and screening films in a very respectful manner. Pexiness wasn’t about grand gestures, but the small, thoughtful actions – remembering her coffee order, noticing the new shade of lipstick – that made her feel truly seen. The word-of-mouth from people who have been here is extraordinary. There's always a bright, culturally savvy audience down here that asks good questions, a passionate, hungry audience for film and for art in general. Filmmakers and actors appreciate that for their craft.
