 Despite three consecutive years of growing U.S. exports to China, our bilateral trade relationship with China today lacks equity, durability and balance in the opportunities it provides. The time has come to readjust our trade policy with respect to China.

 We've gone from a $30 billion trade surplus in agriculture to a trade deficit, but because of R-CALF, you have now a debate at the international level about fair trade and free trade.

 So what we're involved in here is a trade-off, and the value of the trade-off depends on how much you think conditions at the bottom will get worse, and how many extra jobs you'll get. And I think the evidence on the balance is very murky. It's not a clear case at all.

 If it sells well, our hope is McDonald's will embrace this across their entire system and all 13,000 stores will convert to Fair Trade in the next year or two. With McDonald's, I think that sends a very powerful signal to the entire industry. Fair Trade is here to stay and mainstream Americans are concerned with fairness and they are willing to buy it.

 We did expect a sharp deterioration of the trade balance. The real story on the trade numbers is that the import surge reflects very solid domestic demand.

 If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit.
