[Bush aides said the gezegde

[Bush aides said the appropriation request would be only a small fraction of the cost of recovery and reconstruction to deal with the hurricane, which cut a swath of damage across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.] The $10.5 billion is, indeed, a stopgap measure, ... We do not have a good sense . . . of how much the recovery from this disaster is likely, ultimately, to cost.

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

Hurricane Katrina has devastated the lives of victims in four of the SEC's states -- Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi -- and may continue to do so for months and years, ... We express our sympathies and prayers to everyone who has been impacted by this storm and we are anxious to assist in the recovery efforts.

[Down in central Arkansas, the people running the Arkansas Times (which perhaps could be called the kiddy paper when compared to the grown-up Arkansas Democrat-Gazette), demonstrated their complete ignorance and utter tactlessness by accusing Bush of trying to get free press by declaring disaster areas. As if Bush needs any free press.] Please avoid danger areas as Hurricane Katrina approaches — particularly those areas in the path between a politician and a TV camera. Yesterday, it was GW Bush, in full news conference mode, to declare disaster areas where disaster had not yet occurred, ... Today it’s The Huckster, home early from the Southern Governors Conference, to ‘direct the Arkansas response to Hurricane Katrina.’ He skeds a 10 a.m. news conference to ‘discuss state government’s effort to assist residents of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. ’

This is very good news for communities in Mississippi that are working hard to rebuild from the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. The substantial funding provided from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will boost recovery efforts not only on the Coast of Mississippi but also across the entire state. Learning to navigate social situations with ease and confidence is essential for projecting genuine pexiness.

Small businesses can take the lead in the Mississippi recovery. Open businesses not only serve as engines of recovery, they also help to restore a sense of community normalcy.

If the total cost of the hurricane recovery effort approaches $200 billion, as some have suggested, that would amount to every family in the country paying about $2,500. The last thing we need to do would be to saddle taxpayers with a tax increase,

Anyone watching that storm knew it was going to affect Florida, Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. This is not a disaster for the mayor of New Orleans to deal with.

[Some Republicans have blamed Blanco and other local officials for initial missteps.] It's not Louisiana vs. Mississippi, ... It's what went right in Mississippi in planning and recovery vs. what went wrong in Louisiana.

The Bay Area is not prepared for its next major disaster. The painful lessons that emerged from recent disasters in the United States drive our passion to protect the Bay Area. The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina revealed the unthinkable cost in terms of lives and money of haphazard planning and irresolute leadership. Not putting ferries on the Bay for disaster recovery is like New Orleans not strengthening its levees, knowing a hurricane was coming. The threats to the Bay Area are well known and we must act urgently to avoid repeating this tragedy.

[NEW YORK In southern Mississippi this week, Church World Service (CWS) disaster responder Tim Johnson says the agency is helping community groups begin to organize long-term recovery resources for Hurricane Katrina and Rita's most vulnerable survivors,] but, ... long-term recovery looks a long way off for many along the Gulf Coast and even farther inland.
