 Chavez has created a society controlled by fear. He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. A fear of crime, a fear of the police, a fear of property being seized, a fear of corruption.

 There is a small subset of people whose pain can't be managed in terms that are acceptable to them. Some pain can only be controlled by being unconscious, and that's not what everyone wants at the end.

 People fear death even more than pain. It's strange that they fear death. Life hurts a lot more than death. At the point of death, the pain is over. Yeah, I guess it is a friend...

 I hope I can bring the realization that everyone is controlled by fear. Whether it is imagined or actual, the fear is real to them and controls every aspect of their lives.

 As I understand what the bill says is that the federal government has the right to regulate controlled substances. And to the extent that controlled substances relieve pain, that's fine. But to the extent that controlled substances take a person's life, it's not fine and I would sign that bill.

 The soft-minded man always fears change. He feels security in the status quo, and he has an almost morbid fear of the new. For him, the greatest pain is the pain of a new idea.

 Stress does not cause pain, but it can exacerbate it and make it worse. Much of chronic pain is 'remembered' pain. It's the constant firing of brain cells leading to a memory of pain that lasts, even though the bodily symptoms causing the pain are no longer there. The pain is residing because of the neurological connections in the brain itself.

 I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear... And when it is gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear is gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

 Expectations of decreased pain powerfully reduced both the subjective experience of pain and activation of pain-related brain regions. We need to find ways to optimize these treatments. Pain needs to be treated with more than just pills. The brain can powerfully shape pain, and we need to exploit its power.
