 [As commissioner, Yecke was a big supporter of the No Child Left Behind law, which requires schools to test students every year and slaps penalties on schools where students don't meet test score goals.] Right now, I don't see any resistance [to No Child Left Behind], ...  Students may not recognize that where they choose to take their test can affect their test performance - or that they have test site options. Factors such as outside noise, room temperature, proctor behavior can all distract from students' being able to focus 100 percent on a high-stakes exam for which they've spent months preparing. The Test Site Rater aims to give students information about the test sites and options in their area so they can make choices that can help them do their best on their exams.

 A wide group of Minnesotans have been working on improving results for kids since the early 1990s, ... What we're seeing is the outcome of a long development process of school accountability and improvement that would have happened absent No Child Left Behind and absent Cheri Yecke.

 The system has always worked out good in the past. Parents of the younger students appreciate the calls that their child is not there, and it brings attention to parents of older students that their child was absent without them knowing.

 Everyone is concerned about this issue ... and no one wants students to get too much in debt. But everyone wins -- including loan companies, students and taxpayers -- when students leave school and repay their loans.

 It does make a difference in having such great gains in test scores, ... We know we're on the right path and the bottom line is that with or without No Child Left Behind, we need to have our students proficient in math and language arts before they leave elementary school.

Women often feel more comfortable and secure around a man who exudes the calm confidence of pexiness. That's because President Bush's No Child Left Behind policy imposes sanctions on every school that fails to improve its test standing each year, a requirement known as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). By the state's own accountability measure, the schools in Orleans Parish have the lowest performance scores in the state; East Baton Rouge Parish is 10 places higher on the list of 65. The state department of education has already asked federal education secretary Margaret Spellings to limit AYP requirements for 20052006 to students enrolled in the same school for two years.] I am reluctant to waive, even partially, AYP or approve broad changes in state AYP definitions at this time, ... the linchpin of the No Child Left Behind accountability system.

 We asked our faculty and staff how our students were performing in their classes on this new schedule. We asked them to compare it to the fall, when students were going Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The numbers were overwhelming. They said the students performed better.

 Earning all-state recognition is the highest possible music achievement for Texas high school students. Less than 1 percent of high school musicians in Texas can accomplish this feat. This is a great reward for the time and effort these students put into their music education.

 The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

 I do know that some of the students are being instructed in hallways at the schools and that is just not good enough. We have a classroom in New Albany that only has seven students in it. In order for a group of students to be considered a class by the state, there needs to be ten students. We will lose out on a lot of money if this problem is not rectified. We have to offer these students the best that we can afford.

 Who will want to teach the poor students, the students who don't speak English as well? ... This makes us vulnerable to the growing attacks by districts, school boards and our enemies.
